Cinestill D96 is a powder-based film developer that is well-suited for use with black and white motion picture stocks, as well as other traditional and tabular grain films. It provides a distinct S-curve contrast profile with forgiving highlight control for a unique cine-inspired look. This powder should be mixed to make 1L of stock solution, which can then be diluted 1:1 to make enough stock solution for processing approximately 16 rolls or 100' of 35mm film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is F96 an acid fixer or a basic fixer?

A: CineStill Film F96 B&W+Bleach-Bypass Rapid Fixer (To Make 1L) fixer is acidic, the pH is 6.75.

Q: 2. Whats the expiration time once open or used for the first time? Also should be added extra developing time per roll developed?

A: Average is roughly 3-6 months, and you should add 15 seconds every time.

Q: 3. What is new about this?

A: It is the same developer as before. Kodak recently change their internal catalog number.

Q: 4. Does this work on X-ray film?

A: CineStill Film does not list x-ray film as compatible. Chances are it can work but it would take experimenting on the process times. This is a link to the films they have tested and the developing times, https://bit.ly/3icoIN7 .

Q: 5. Will it work with both c41 black and white film rolls and regular black and white rolls ?

A: DF96 is a black and white film developer only. If you own C-41 B&W film by Kodak those films will need to be processed with C-41 which is a color developer.

A: An average of 3 minutes

Q: 7. Is this the same as f96 universal motion picture rapid fixer?

Q: 8. What about an unopened bottle? If stored indoors, climate controlled, what is the shelf life?

A: The shelf life of an unopened bottle is approximately 1 year.

Q: 9. does this really work?

A: Yes

Q: 10. Do you need to use wetting agent after you finish developing?

A: While not absolutely required, it is likely the best solution (pun unintended) to avoid streaks after developing.

I have used this exclusively for a while now, and am very pleased with this product. I even develop some of my prints with it, as I like certain photos to have a generously exposed look (see Henry Wessel), and this seems to have been working for me.

Quick and Satisfying. This product is a marvel if you're just starting out with developing. The results are excellent, saving both time and money. It's long-lasting, odorless, and colorless. I highly recommend this Monobath to anyone who is beginning their journey in film development.

Great for pretty much any type of B&W film. I mostly use it with Kodak Tri-X or Ilford HP 400

Developing at home couldn't be any easier! Seriously. This monobath is so forgiving. You can work with a wide range of temperatures, and easily develop at the film rated ASA, or push/pull if needed.

I have only used it for 2 film stocks: Ilford HP5 Plus and Kodak Tri-X. Works great for both.

One minor complaint is that the chemistry diminishes quickly in just a few weeks. You can adjust your times to compensate some. I'd recommend developing multiple rolls in one go, or within 1-3 weeks.

B&H delivers this product promptly, but it doesn't hurt to have an extra bottle on the shelf.

I have been a photographer for a long time now, and had never developed my own film. It always seemed like it was too confusing or involved, or took up too much space, so I never tried it. I wanted to start shooting with a 4x5 camera I picked up, and while I was researching the camera, I found this product.
I can't speak as to whether this gives the best result of anything out there, but it does work. My B&W negatives came out as well as any I have had processed in the past, so I am quite happy.
The solution seems pretty economical in that it says it can be reused for multiple rolls of film, and it is EASY. I just checked the temperature of the solution and followed the directions on the website.
Are there better developers out there? Probably, but I've no experience with them. If you want something simple and can't dedicate a lot of room to developing film, I think this is worth a try.
