Flexible zoom range, fast design, and compact profile, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is a unique take on the ubiquitous and popular telephoto zoom. Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens spans a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range and is characterized by its f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in available light conditions and for controlling depth of field. A sophisticated optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a floating elements system is used to ensure consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2.8' to infinity. Autofocus is handled by a pair of VXD linear motor units, which deliver notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance, and full-time manual focus control is also available. Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 105-270mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.

Six low dispersion elements, including both XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) designs, greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.

Three aspherical elements, including both glass-molded and hybrid types, help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the zoom range.

BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 2.8' at all focal lengths, and a 1:4.6 maximum magnification at the 180mm focal length for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.

Two VXD units work in conjunction with a floating elements system to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.

When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced.

A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens work in Nikon Z6 using the Techart TZE adaptor ? Sony E mount to Nikon Z mount.

A: Yes, this lens will work on the Z6 with the Techart adapter.

Q: 2. What is the length of the lens when fully extended?

A: The extended length is about 7".

Q: 3. Work with A7SIII ?

A: Absolutely! The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD works well with the Sony A7SIII!

Q: 4. Im using the Tamron in the 70 mm macro mode with the a9 set to MF and what I see in the viewfinder is the macro image plus a small red rectangle in a larger black rectangle and a 4.7x script. I assume what Im seeing is the "spotting scope" image and when I hit the shutter release, I get a wide angle shot, no macro. Can someone please expalin to me me how to get the macro image?

A: What you are seeing is the focus magnifier, which is just a tool allowing you to make critical focus adjustments on the subject. To get closer focusing similar to a macro lens, you would need to move the lens within the minimum focusing distance of 10.6" to the subject.

Q: 5. Has anyone found a tripod collar to attach the lens to a tripod? Mine slips when the camera is vertical.

A: A stronger head would cure your problem--I haven't seen a tripod collar that would fit this lens.

Q: 6. Will it work with the new Sony a 7SC camera?

A: Yes, it'll work on any Sony E-Mount camera like the A7C or A7S series.

Q: 7. How long is this item going to remain on back-order? The estimated time is prolonged ever week it seems. This is not very helpful

A: This item is in stock now! 6/18/2020.

Q: 8. Why there's dust inside the glasses? Isn't it weather resistance?

A: Tamron does state that the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD has moisture-resistant construction which has leak-resistant seals throughout the lens barrel to help protect your equipment for greater protection when shooting outdoors. However, leak-resistant is not the same as leak-proof, and there is the possibility that dust may enter the lens when you zoom the lens in and out, or minute dust may be inside the lens during construction. The dust should not negatively affect your image quality. However, if you feel the dust you see in your lens is affecting the lens performance, and if the lens was purchased within the last 30 days, you may contact our Customer Service Department to return the lens for an exchange or a refund.

Q: 9. Is there anything I can buy to extend the zoom out farther than 180?

A: Currently there is no tele-converter that will work with this lens.

Q: 10. what is the minimum autofocus distance? yes i understand you can do 10" with manual focus. but what about af distane? thanks

A: The minimum focus distance 10.6". Auto focus or manual focus.

5 stars b/c of value -- very good performance and a very good price, which is not to say that there are no advantages to the GM 70-200. I have shorter primes and longer zooms that fit most of my needs, but I found myself without the right lens for a special event -- just a family thing -- my daughter's graduation from film school, which was held in a large theater (once upon a time a movie theater). So I wouldn't have a choice photographer's position or any control at all over the lights. My shorter, faster primes would be too short. My 200-600 too slow. So I grabbed a used, very clean version of this lens from B&H, gave it a quick run through -- seemed fine -- and proceeded. I was shooting from a balcony with an A1 and the lens performed exactly as I'd hoped -- very quick focus and good clean results. It doesn't have the build of a GM, but it performs very well, it's MUCH less expensive, and it is smaller and lighter than some alternatives. Time and use will provide more information, but thus far I'm favorably impressed.

Does everything the flagships do, autofocus works nicely, super sharp at f 2.8, and pairs nicely with my G primes

Nice and bright, fast focus and great vibration reduction. Active stabilization on the body combined with the lens' stabilization make for an excellent combo if shooting video.

An excellent alternative to the Sony 70 - 200 zoom. This lens has great image quality and is much lighter, at less than half the cost

Yes, a focus dial and a manual focus knob would be great. But aside from that this lens works very well with my 7m4 SONY. It is quiet and quick to focus. Th 'macro' setting has very limited depth of field, but it does in a pinch.

I love this lens. It is my go-to from portraits to cityscapes. My only complaint is that it does not have a AF-MF switch on it. Other than that, great lens especially for the money.
