This Kase Filter Kit includes a UV filter and a circular polarizer filter. Each filter in this kit can provide one of two enhancements to your imagery while using a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens. A UV filter adapter ring is also provided, as well as a lens cap, and a filter case that can accommodate both filters, which feature multi-coated Schott B270 Superwhite glass for enhanced clarity and color fidelity.

A general-use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight, the UV Filter can be screwed on after the UV filter adapter ring is installed along the front of a compatible lens. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created while using this filter, and adjustments to exposure are not required. The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching the front lens element and provide additional protection in case of situations where scratching could occur.

The circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. It is made specifically to fit within the accessory filter slot of the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens. With that lens, the effect of this filter occurs behind the main glass elements instead of in front of them.

The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

The circular polarizer filter includes an integrated locking mechanism to secure it within the compatible lens, as well as an external dial to allow rotation of the filter glass for control of the polarization effect.

I do a lot of HS football photos and worried that with the 400mm I may be a little to close to the action. It took me a little bit of getting use to but once I figured out my standing points on the field I have got nothing but amazing shots with this lens. I shoot with a 1DX MarkII. This is a great combination. Beautiful color, sharp and fast! If you can afford it I recommend it. I was debating between this and the 300mm 2.8 and believe I would have been happy with the 300mm but am very happy I bought the 400mm.

Terrific for Handheld or tripod bird photos or wildlife. On a Canon 7D - has great reach while giving very good detail and bokeh With a 2X extension can get outstanding shots with Tripod - but looses AF with the Extension tube.

At the high speeds necessary for photographing birds, I am able to get remarkably sharp images while hand-holding this lens with the EOS 1-D. The combination is certainly not light, but worth the effort for the amazing results.

I will be going on an African safari later this year. The luggage weight restriction is a major challenge for this trip. After doing quite a bit of research and evaluating the pros (lightweight and small for a super telephoto prime, relatively fast autofocus that's compatible with 1.4 III tube) and the cons (image quality and contrast) of this lens, I purchased it with reluctance and hesitation. After receiving this lens, I went to the zoo and was very pleased with the images I captured. I've tried this lens on two camera bodies 5D II and 7D. The images on the 5D II were sharp and contrast doesn't seem to be an issue. I also got great results on the 7D (not to mention a better reach due to the crop sensor). So if you're thinking about getting a Canon 400mm f/4.0 DO, go for it.

I've been exploring super telephoto lenses for over a year, so when I read about this lens, with Diffractive Optic engineering which allowed it to be portable, I was intrigued. I had rented a 400mm f/5.6 and was underwhelmed. I purchased, then returned the Tamron 150-600mm, again underwhelmed (hanging AF issues on Canon, images too soft), and slowly came round that you get what you pay for. Life is too short for inferior photos. And there is nothing like the sensation of pointing a lens at your subject, be it still or moving, and the camera and lens is sympatico with the photographer. You get that sense with this lens!I've had this lens about 3 weeks and every day I am blown away by its capabilities. I have it on a Canon EOS-1D X. Interesting to note that in the lens manual on p 1 of the English instructions, it says The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed 4 stops faster when using an EOS-1D X - based on CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association( standards). Good to know, and it feels that way. I live in wide open spaces and have great photo ops, but they are often hundreds, if not a couple thousand feet away. This lens is tack sharp, and has no problem doing that... 200% crops no problem, and often 300% is still astonishing. Blazing fast AF... nearly telepathic! I've tried this lens on everything... landscape, still portraits, action, BIF... getting the photos I've always dreamed of. I'm attaching pic samples.Yes, it is expensive... but compared to its competition, it's a bargain. The 400mm f/2.8 is $10k and you have to have it on a monopod/tripod. I hike around with this lens... and to my knowledge there is no other glass of this quality that you can say that about. We all find ways to afford the stuff that's really important to us. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Like others, I was justifying the DO vs the 'L' series lens. This lens is light, very sharp & fast. I shoot kids, sports & birds with this lens & am very happy with the results. I stop the aperture down to F5 for tack sharp images of birds, & open it to F4 only when needed as it can be a little softer. Still quite sharp at F4 though. Contrast is good, I add extra post production no matter which lens I use. Detail & colour are as good if not better than my other L lens. Buy this for the portability for handheld shots at 400mm

A breeze to install, no image degradation- protects a very expensive lens and honestly improves picture quality through reduced glare etc

Excellent

This is a very nice lens although admittingly pricey. It is worth every penny because it has IS and is hand holdable. I tried the 500mm which is an awesome lens and found it possible for limited handhold, but it is best suited with gimbal tripod setup. If I need further reach with the 400, I'll use my 1.4x extender with my FF sensor camera or turn to my crop frame sensor camera for extended reach.
