Built for demanding video workflows, the 2TB Helix Dura USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Portable NVMe SSD from Oyen Digital is designed to deliver constant transfer speeds for large multimedia files. Featuring 2TB of 3D TLC NAND flash memory, this portable NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 solid-state drive can achieve read and write speeds of up to 1050 MB/s. It is compatible with 10 Gb/s USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 devices and is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4. However, when connected to Thunderbolt 3 or 4, it will continue to operate at speeds associated with 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. the 8T.B version , is it good for heavy duty video Editing? I want to use with my macbook pro M1

A: Yes, the Oyen Digital 8TB Helix Dura USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Portable NVMe SSD would be excellent for video editing.

Q: 2. Why is this SSD $240 cheaper than the equivalent 8TB model from Sabrent? What's wrong with it?

A: MSRP of products is decided by manufacturers, and further insight as to said manufacturers' decision process is not typically forthcoming. There is certainly nothing "wrong" with the Oyen Digital E18-8TBICS5 M.2 drive, and it comes with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.

Q: 3. Does it have Error Correction Codes and Cache like the OWC 8TB Equivalent (BH #OWCP4U8T1PT8)?

A: The Oyen Digital 8TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD has Error Correction Codes and Cache like the OWC 8TB Equivalent.

Q: 4. Oyen digital helix 8TB portable ssd will be compatible with Thunderbolt 5?

A: At this time the manufacturer does not have information if the Oyen Digital 8TB Helix Dura USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Portable NVMe SSD is compatible with Thunderbolt 5.

Q: 5. Can I use it as a ursamini pro 12k recording card via usb-c port?

A: Per Black Magic Design's website, yes.

Q: 6. I'm hoping to use this as a boot on my late 2015 iMac. Is there a way to connect it to a Thunderbolt 2 port?

A: Unfortunately USB 3.1 is not compatible with Thunderbolt 2, so the LaCie 2TB Portable USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD v2 cannot work with a Thunderbolt 2 port.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with the OWC Express 4M2?

A: The Oyen Digital 8TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD is compatible with the OWC Express 4M. Note it will run slower.

Q: 8. How does this work with a "mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15" Retina"? It has Thunderbolt 2 ports, not sure about the USB port. Speeds?

A: As this LaCie 2TB Portable USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD v2, is using a USB C connection, it would not connect right into your mid 2014 MacBook Pro. You can get a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Plug that into this hard drive, and then use a Thunderbolt 2 cable from the adapter to your computer. But you would only be getting Thunderbolt 2 speeds.

Q: 9. How would this work on a MAC with Time Machine?

A: The LaCie 500GB Portable USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD v2 BH #LASTKS500400 can be used with Time Machine.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with the Xcellon M2NS USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 M.2 SSD Enclosure?

A: Yes, the Oyen Digital 8TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD is compatible with M.2 SSD enclosures such as the Xcellon M2NS.

I don't often write reviews but as this has none I felt like it was needed! I paired this with an Acasis Thunderbolt enclosure TBU405 and it works as advertised. Speed tests with CrystalMark show 2669MB/s read and 1738MB/s write with default testing setting, 16GiB, 5 files transferred. This is compared with 2656MB/s read and 1741MB/s write with the same enclosure with the Sabrent Rocket 4 8TB. Both got similarly toasty but within reason at 56 C under testing loads.

Some things to know: I initialized this drive first on a Windows 10 PC and it would NOT work on my MacBook Pro, I had to start the process over with the Mac instead. It works great on both with exFAT file system. I have not tried using internally as this was never my intention, it could perform differently compared to the Sabrent Rocket 4 in those conditions. I would hope the speeds are faster when used internally. I cannot attest to the longevity of this drive given I have only had it a week. This is currently the least expensive 8TB m2 nvme ssd on the market and at this point I would not have any reservations purchasing this drive over a competitors.

The first step was installing it in a Sabrent model EC-PCIE NVMe M.2 SSD TO PCIe X16/X8/X4 CARD WITH ALUMINUM HEAT SINK (which I DO NOT recommend). That was so this Oyen M.2 SSD could be used in a PCI-e slot. (Basically the problem with the Sabrent adapter was that none of the thermal pads were the right thickness, and there was no guidance on their usage in the instructions. I took my best guess and moved on.)

The next step was plugging it into a PCI-e slot on my HP Z640 Workstation's motherboard. I then updated my PC to the latest BIOS. When I booted into Windows 10, I didn't see a new drive. That's because I needed to use the WIndows Disk Management tool to create a partition and then a volume. After that, the drive was visible and usable.
