The EOS RP features the RF lens mount, which support Canon's line of RF-mount lenses. This mount is characterized by its wide 54mm diameter and short 20mm flange-back distance, which promotes the ability to design lenses that are both faster and smaller than their SLR equivalents. The mount also incorporates a 12-pin electronic contact system for more sophisticated autofocus and image stabilization capabilities. This mount design also lends full compatibility to existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses via an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.

A large 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor is featured and serves as an ideal balance between high-resolution output, low-light performance, and high-speed capabilities. When paired with the DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS RP has a wide native sensitivity range from ISO 100-40000 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, continuous shooting up to 5 fps is possible for working with moving subjects.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face or Eye Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery. Additionally, the focus system is sensitive down to EV -5 for working in truly low-light conditions with accurate AF capabilities.

Designed for multimedia image-maker, the EOS RP supports UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 23.98 fps at 120 Mb/s, along with Full HD 1080p and HD 720p at 60 fps for slow motion playback. When recording in-camera, 4K video has 4:2:0 sampling and 8-bit color depth, and 4:2:2 8-bit output is possible when using an external recorder.

Audio can be recorded using the on-board stereo microphone or an optional external mic can also be used via the 3.5mm mic jack.

Also, 5-axis Dual Sensing IS can be used when recording video to electronically reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper, smoother recording.

  • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder affords a bright and clear means for eye-level viewing.

  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a vari-angle design for easier use when working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It is also a touchscreen for intuitive control over shooting, playback, and menu navigation controls.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device via the Canon Camera Connect app, which also supports geotagging your files using your mobile device's location data.

  • In-camera charging over USB is supported for easier on-the-go charging.

Extending the capabilities of the camera, Canon's EOS Webcam Utility software lets you turn your camera into a versatile webcam by just connecting it to a computer via USB. Compatible with a variety of streaming apps, including ZOOM, YouTube Live, Microsoft Teams, and more, this software also maintains the ability to record internally while livestreaming.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this camera have IBIS?

A: This camera features 5 axis image stabilization for video.

Q: 2. What is the file type for 4K recording? And is it ALL-I or IPB?

A: This camera records 4K at 120 Mb/s, which would be more in line with an IPB mode.

Q: 3. Does rp support usb charging?

A: Yes. Using the Canon PD-E1 USB Power Adapter, B&H # CAPDE1, you can charge the Canon Battery Pack LP-E17 without removing it from the camera. Do note that charging stops if you operate the camera. If you need to operate the camera while it is receiving power, you would need to purchase the Canon ACK-E18 AC Adapter and DC Coupler Kit, B&H # CAACE6NDCCK.

Q: 4. Does the Camera have a Clean HDMI out for use with the video assist ot atomos recorder?

A: Yes it does. The EOS RP has a Clean HDMI Output to use with recording monitors like the Atomos Ninja Flame. https://bhpho.to/2qc121K

Q: 5. Is the rp over hite in wedding videography?

A: As far as we are aware, the EOS RP may overheat in 4K but tends to stay cooler during 1080P recording and last longer. While the camera may still overheat, Canon has not provided a recording timeframe for 4K or 1080P like they have with their R6 and R5 cameras.

Q: 6. Should I buy an adapter for each lens or is it reasonable to leave to EF adapter on and change lens from that?

A: the change is instant. Use just one adapter

Q: 7. Made in Japan?

A: This item's country of origin is Japan.

Q: 8. Auto focus

A: Yes, this camera has auto focus.

Q: 9. Which is the fastest sd card that the Canon RP can handle? Is UHS-l 95mbs sufficient? Can it use 300mbs? Thank you in advance!!

A: It supports UHS-II, so these SanDisk sku's: SDSDXPK-064G/ SDSDXPK/128G

Q: 10. I'm a biologist and I want to take some pictures from animals in the nature, specially birds. Does this camera have shoots fast enough for such practice?

A: I would say the RP is only marginal for bird photography (especially birds in flight) since it has only a speed of 5 pics/sec in one shot mode and 4 in servo mode. The canon R would be better if you want to stay w a Canon mirrorless since it has i think 8 pics/sec. Moreover you will need a large telezoom lens (min 300 mm, better is 400 to 500) and the R will balance better with this heavy lens. If your budget is limited you may also look for a higher speed APS-c camera since it has a crop factor of 1.6 (Canon) or 1.5 (Nikon) so a Nikon 500 or a Canon 7 mkII would be ok w a cheaper and lighter 300 lens. If mirrorless is a must, look at the Sony camera's their speed is higher in most cases.

Camera has a great hand grip, its features, are surprising for the price of the  camera. Ive shot blooming cactus, both macro and full frame ,sceneics . Its a little slow when shooting wildlife,  compared to my 5dmk4 but they are different class of camera. Its ease of carry, being small is really nice. I use  a24-70L and 70-200f4L and they suit the camera very well. Looking forward to many years of use.

Great camera for product shots as well as a great lightweight companion for long day shoots. Loving the new RF lens, and being able to use my other Canon EF lenses is a huge bonus. Didnt take long to get the menu down and being able to customize the dials for different settings is a great time saver.

I upgraded from the 60D because I found myself not taking my camera out as much due to its weight. I also have been itching to get a full-frame camera after seeing what the 50mm lenses are capable of. This killed both birds with one stone, and my whole kit dropped 10 ounces. Also the adapter works flawlessly, I just leave it on since I dont own any RF lenses.

I was very wary of the move to mirrorless due to using an EVF and battery life, but I found that the EVF is actually remarkably clear and bright enough to use in broad daylight. Its also nice to have some electronic aids such as focus peaking which make this camera significantly easier to manual focus on than my 60D. Battery life is way worse than my 60D (I charged my 60D only once per ~10 sessions), but I think thats a small price to pay for how much I gained.

Video features are lacking with no 24fps in 1080, very cropped 4k, and no in-body stabilization, but I never shoot video so I dont care. If you want to get into amateur filmmaking, Id look elsewhere.

Last note: I absolutely love the auto-focus. You can position the focus point almost anywhere in the frame, instead of being bound to a cluster near the center like on most DSLRs. Do yourself a huge favor and enable drag to focus, then you can slide your thumb across the touchscreen without taking your eye from the viewfinder and it will slide the focus point around in relative position.

I have a 5D mkIII, 7D and a G5x. All are excellent and there are functions on the two DSLRs that are not on the EOS RP. But when Im hiking in the national parks, state parks, etc. the size and weight of the RP makes it a real pleasure to carry. I recently returned from Sedona, AZ where I took the RP. It was a dream to carry, the image quality is excellent and the EF-EOS R adapter works very well. It focuses fast and there is no apparent loss of light. Being like an extension tube I dont know exactly how the adapter works. All I know is it works and it works well. In addition I know many photographers who do not like the EVF on any camera. I have not found it to be a problem. Ive been using it on my G5x with excellent success. There are two down sides. One, Canon should make the RP to use the same battery as the R. The battery for the RP does not last long. So buy a couple of extra batteries. Second, Adobe has not upgraded Lightroom to handle the new CR3 RAW file. Overall it works very well for me producing excellent image quality in a smaller lighter package and it is very quite.

Ive read a lot of negative reviews from folks on this camera. I think they are mostly from people who havent shot with it. My old Mark II died, I mean the mirror completely fell out of it. I work professionally as a photographer in advertising and I shoot with large DSLRs all the time, but I was feeling like i didnt want to be lugging a giant camera with me for personal shooting, so I found myself always using my iPhone. The RP is perfect for what I need it for. The body size is manageable and its light. I bought the 35mm RF lens with it, which I love and I have some other old lenses that I am adapting to use. I tend to go towards lighter lenses for this setup even though they are not L glass, and I am getting great shots and I am using them more than my L glass because they are more portable. The 28-105 works great, as well as the lighter primes. Im not itching for new RF lenses since my old ones work so well and they are so light. This also makes the RP an economical choice because investing in a brand new system and all new lenses just didnt make sense.

I dont work in video, and if I was a videographer I might not go for this camera, but I also just dont love 4k and dont care about that at all. Most serious photographers I know are serious about photography and retouching and dont cross over into serious video production, although there are exceptions. The video in 1080 is great for me.

All-in-all this camera is a great price and produces beautiful images. The camera body is only part of the equation and I think people put too much into specs and not enough into taking great shots and really learning post-processing. For me this camera works well because I will actually take it with me, and thats the first hurdle to getting great shots. The best camera is the one youll grab when walking out the door.

Lite weight and abel to carry around with out muscel pain... All of the setting are the same as my 5d MIV so it was no problem adjusting. I just took some pictures of a non family wedding and used Auto to see how the camera handles low lite and movement. The pictures turned out great being in Auto mode. I also like I was able to use the adapter so I didnt have to buy new lenses. The adapter is great and adds very little extra weight. Over all I am very happy with this camera. The file photo is untouched but made smaller to be able to download. Again this photo was taken in Auto mode.

I currently own and use a canon mark iv and 6d for paid work. Also a nikon d500 for birding...so I own and use some nice gear. I had the sony a7ii and loved the files, but the camera was not intuitive for me so I sold it and bought the RP. It was a good decision for my situation. The files are lovely, the interface familiar and with the adapter I can make use of all my great canon glass. I have tried them all and they work fine with the adapter. I yet to purchase a lens for this camera, maybe in the future. I have been using it daily since it arrived and so far no problems. I plan on purchasing an extra battery...I process my RAW files with either DPP (the best for color) or ACR...not lightroom so much. Good purchase for my situation.

Pro studio shooter with occasional documentary field work, 5DmkIII and a quiver of EF L series lenses in my kit, I shoot stills only zero video. I picked up an RP for a travel/snapshot/casual camera and secondary body after the M50 I got in February wasn’t doing the job with its cropped sensor. I am wildly impressed with the image quality in such a compact body and the autofocus system is awesome. Custom controls setup as robustly as a pro body. I paired it with the 40mm f2.8 pancake and the control ring adapter to hold me over until Canon releases an RF-mount pancake, but until then this setup is fast, lightweight, and sharp. It goes where you don’t want to lug your DSLR kit without sacrificing image quality and I’m looking forward to seeing more RF lenses released in the future. Total ripper field camera for stills, ignore the vloggers ranting otherwise.
