I have 5 in a Synology DX517 extension box and they work fine.

This little monster is a niche drive, best suited for massive, static data storage. If you have a laptop that has room for only one drive and you want to game on it, forget it. You will be very disappointed. Even if used for a boot drive on a machine not used for gaming, you probably will be disappointed with this drive.


Also, being QLC, the write life of this drive will be considerably less than with TLC and MLC drives. Currently, this is the only 8TB consumer 2.5 SATA drive.



However, it you need a large capacity drive to store documents, music, or movies which will be mostly read only once the data has been written to the drive, then this drive should meet your needs.


When first populating the drive from another one that has a lot of data on it, once the internal cache fills up (which happens quickly), the write speed will slow dramatically, albeit still faster than most HDDs. However, this can be acceptable if you are having to do this only once since, after that, any additional writes will be much faster as long as they aren't too large. My largest movies are no larger than 32GB (most are much smaller) which can be written to this drive with no trouble and play just fine.


I use these drives for storing my music and movies on my laptops (I use much faster NVMe drives for the boot drives) and they serve me well. I also have several that I use with a dock or enclosures for backup drives for my data. If I have to run a large backup update, I just start it before going to bed and let it run all night.


Again, this drive is not for everyone but, if you need a lot of room for static data that will be mostly read only and have a SATA port to connect it to, then this drive should serve you well.

Using Samsung Migration software to create back up boot drives is extremely useful and easy creating confidence for any workstation issues. Samsung SSDs for data storage and complete systems support.

I bought this drive to backup a very old 2 TB WD Black server drive with 78,000 hours on it. After over-provisioning and formatting the drive as GPT NTFS, I immediately copied 1 TB of data over to the 870 QVO. It took quite a long time but it was on an old USB port on a 17 yr old computer. Using Synback by 2BrightSparks gave me a verified copy, which so far is working beautifully and way faster that the old platter drive. I love it.

I build home RAIDs for my editing needs an I always choose Samsung. These are the best SSD drives.
