Presenting impressive reach in a relatively compact design, the Leica L-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary lens, from Sigma, is a versatile telephoto zoom mixing a hand-holdable design with apt optical performance. A series of low dispersion glass elements are used to achieve high clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range, and to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Complementing the optics is intuitive handling, in which a stepping motor delivers fast, near silent autofocus performance along with fine-tuned manual focus control. Additionally, four stop-effective optical image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting and this 100-400mm is also compatible with the optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for steady shooting atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes:

  • Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras but can also work with APS-C models where it provides a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
  • One F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
  • Optical image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.

  • Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
  • At the 100mm end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 3.7' is available, and at the 400mm end, the minimum focusing distance is 5.2' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.1.
  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

  • Integrated AFL button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a focus limiter switch for faster focusing performance within certain distance ranges. There is a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extending.
  • Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity, and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
  • Compatible with optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for working atop a tripod or monopod; the included PT-31 Protective Cover can be attached to the lens to maintain a seamless appearance if the tripod socket is not used.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma UD-11 USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware, as well as being compatible with the optional Sigma TC-1411 1.4x and TC-2011 2x teleconverters.

Q: 3. Considering the length of this telephoto lens, would it be do well on an aps-c body such as the Sony a6000 or 6100 at the full 400mm (600 equivalent). I do realize the image stabilization is on this lens, but would this be better suited on a body with Ibis such as the a6500? Would the two stabilizers work together?

A: Yes, the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary Lens for Sony E would do well with a Sony APS-C body like the A6000 or A6100 at the highest focal length. The Optical Stabilization in this lens can work in conjunction with the built in stabilization on the A6500.

Q: 4. Does this lens work well with the Sony A1 (ie. good AF, sharp, etc)?

A: This Sigma 100-400 works really well on the Sony Alpha 1. The autofocus is reliable, image is sharp and the lens is much lighter than it's peers. However, compared to the Sigma 150-600 or the Sony 100-400 GM. It's going to be slower and less sharp in comparison. The biggest trade off though is for the price and weight. It 's much lighter than it's peers and for the price it's an excellent lens.

If this lens has a weakness, I haven't found it yet. The autofocus is absolutely on par with native lenses, the in-lens stabilization works phenomenally well with the IBIS present in the A7iii, and the lens is tack sharp at every focal length. There aren't really any surprises to be found here, just a near flawlessly executed long telephoto lens.

As a new photograph player very happy with this lens. With a6600 it can find the bird's eye (but not every time).

Has a bit of noise during focusing, I guess it's normal. Too bad the tripod collar costs a ton

A sharp zoom with 400mm reach for under $1000, need I say more? Sigma if you are reading this, PLEASE release teleconverters for this and I will buy every single one of them. As you can see that is my only complaint. Don't spend 2.5X the money just to get 1/3 of a stop more. For me, it was either this or the 200-600 G lens, but when I saw how big that bazooka is, I immediately got this instead and I am super happy with it. I used my trusty old A7iii with this lens. Overall, this lens is amazing, and worth every penny.

I wanted a 100-400 lens to use with my A7 III but didn't want to pay the price of the Sony version. I am very happy with the quality and performance of this Sigma version. A friend has the Sony 100-400 and we've compared photos and are truly hard-pressed to see a difference between the lens quality and photos. The only knock against the lens I have is the lack of tripod collar. I purchased it and it's a great addition but I feel that Sigma should have included it with this lens, even if they had to charge a bit more. I do recommend this lens a lot.

This lens is sharp but not overly large and heavy like the 100-400 G Master. I’m satisfied with the price/performance/size.

I have only had this lens a little while but I am very impressed with it. For the focal range it provides, it is easily hand-holdable, thanks to its relatively light weight and stabilization. Mounted on my Leica SL I am fully capable of doing nature/wildlife photography—without a tripod. The image quality is outstanding. In fact I was truly impressed—before I realized I had not turned the stabilization on! Excellent quality, light weight, stabilization, and very reasonable cost make this lens a great buy.

I have enjoyed this lens. I am still learning to adjust for lower light but photos are very crisp using my Sony a7iii.

I am not a pro, nor do I take photos for a living, it is just a personal hobby, so my review is not from a pro, just a person that enjoys taking photos.
I just got the lens, it is a little on the heavy side...but I knew that from reading the specs, so there's no surprises. It immediately feels solid, well-made. It is fast to focus in my Leica CL, no hunting even in semi-low light situation. Image stabilization (in lens) is pretty good, I managed to take a couple of good shots handheld at ISO 3200 (which is where it still doesn't add much noise).
I did have to wait a couple of extra weeks from the release for the same lens from Sony but it has been worth the wait. Can't beat the price-value proposition, even if there are a couple of drawbacks (ie. f stop and weight).
