The Ice 52mm HB760 Infrared Filter is designed to help capture images of how a subject reflects or transmits infrared light. Infrared light waves occupy the space in the electromagnetic spectrum behind visible light due to their longer wavelengths. Many surfaces and materials react to or emit infrared light waves differently than visible light waves, which provides the potential for photographs of subjects or subject properties that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. Such images require an infrared-sensitive medium such as infrared film or a digital photographic sensor, which may be more effective when used without the infrared-blocking filters frequently built over them.

Conventional light sources such as the sun, photographic strobes, or incandescent lighting may be used to provide infrared illumination. However, because infrared films or digital photographic sensors can be more sensitive to the relatively higher energy and shorter-wavelength visible light those sources also emit, the effects of infrared light can be otherwise obscured. This Ice 52mm HB760 Infrared Filter makes it possible to capture images of how subjects are illuminated by infrared light by blocking ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light waves 760nm or less from the lens it is mounted onto. This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It features a slim, aluminum alloy filter ring that helps prevent vignetting while remaining durable and lightweight.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How many stops of light do you loose with this filter?

A: I don't have the exact figures with me here, but on a bright full-sun day my exposures using a Canon 5D MKIV and Canon 70-200 2.8 IS was 30 seconds @ f/2.8, 200 ISO. Hope that helps!

Q: 2. is this work with Nikon D7100 ?

A: It will work with any digital camera, however, you are most likely looking at a 20-30 second exposure at ISO200. This filter on a film camera with ISO 400 film is rated at 8-12 ISO so you will have to compensate accordingly. Also, all composition must be done prior to putting the filter on the lens as you will not be able to see once it is in place.

Q: 3. How well will this filter work in a snowy environment like Yellowstone in the winter?

A: While you can use an infrared filter to photograph snow, snow will still appear white. One issue with photographing in snowy conditions is the sky is normally overcast with clouds. The strongest infrared images tend to occur on clear, sunny days and with lots of foliage in the scene (foliage which is usually absent in the winter). That being said, if you capture images in the snow on a clear, sunny day and there are evergreen trees/bushes or other plants/trees that still have visible leaves that reflect infrared lighting, you would get dramatic images in these circumstances. Typically, when using the R72 infrared filter, the blue color of the sky will be darkened, while green foliage, like trees and grass, will appear in snow-like tones.

Q: 4. I was planning on shooting both in color and B&W in raw format and was wondering what type of a result i will get in color mode?

A: A RAW color image shot with an infrared filter will produce a yellow/red image with blue foliage.

Q: 5. how many stops of light should we compensate for with this filter?

A: We should compensate about 5-6 stops of light with the Hoya 62mm R72 Infrared Filter.

Q: 6. I own a Nikon D5500, which I understand does not have an optical low-pass filter. The product description for this filter indicates the camera requires a "conversion" to eliminate the low-pass filter. My question: will this filter work as intended without the "conversion" for the D5500? Thanks. Frank

A: No, to use the Kolari Vision Infrared Lens Filter (52mm, 590nm) the camera sensor in the D5500 needs to be modified. It will not work correctly with that.

Q: 7. How much do you have to compensate for light loss?

A: The R72 drops you down approximately 5 to 7 stops.

Q: 8. will this work on sony alpha cameras? i heard you need to modify the camera in order for this to work? I have a7s and a6500

A: The filter works perfectly without any changes to the camera, do you need to do some post processing and you can check on YouTube. I highly recommend the filter

Q: 9. On an unmodified Canon R5 won’t cameras IR blocker stop this from working? Won’t it block 720nm from sensor?

A: Yes, therefore the Hoya 82mm R72 Infrared Filter is to be used with cameras that have been modified.

Q: 10. What is the wallet?

A: Unfortunately we do not have a photo of the wallet but it is made to hold the filters and is included with Ice Infrared HB760/850/950 Set with Wallet (82mm)
