The Ice 77mm HB850 Infrared Filter is designed to help capture images of how a subject reflects or transmits infrared light. Infrared light waves occupy the space in the electromagnetic spectrum behind visible light due to their longer wavelengths. Many surfaces and materials react to or emit infrared light waves differently than visible light waves, which provides the potential for photographs of subjects or subject properties that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. Such images require an infrared-sensitive medium such as infrared film or a digital photographic sensor, which may be more effective when used without the infrared-blocking filters frequently built over them.
Conventional light sources such as the sun, photographic strobes, or incandescent lighting may be used to provide infrared illumination. However, because infrared films or digital photographic sensors can be more sensitive to the relatively higher energy and shorter-wavelength visible light those sources also emit, the effects of infrared light can be otherwise obscured. This Ice 77mm HB850 Infrared Filter makes it possible to capture images of how subjects are illuminated by infrared light by blocking ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light waves 850nm or less from the lens it is mounted onto. This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It features a slim, aluminum alloy filter ring that helps prevent vignetting while remaining durable and lightweight.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does this thing really work? How many Stops should I anticipate opening up? Do I compose without the filter then screw it on the lens?
A: You would need to pre-focus and compose your shot prior to screwing on the Kase 77mm IR 720 Infrared Threaded Filter. The results may vary when using this filter.
Q: 2. Will this filter work with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Fuji XT-3?
A: Neither the Canon EOS 5D Mark II nor the FUJIFILM X-T4 Mirrorless Camera have a specified spectral sensitivity from the manufacturer. That being said, this can be used with either camera, though you will need to use longer exposure times. For better IR sensitivity you would need to have the camera sensors modified. In terms of fitting on a lens, this will depend on the specific lens you are using.
Q: 3. How much light do I lose using this filter? Will I be able to hand hold the camera at ISO 200 and f2.8?
A: Using the Kolari Vision Pro Gen 3 Infrared Lens Filter (780nm, 77mm) on a camera not converted to IR the filter will block 10-15 stops. Using it with an IR converted camera it will be about 1-2 stops of light.
Q: 4. How many stops of light do you loose with this filter?
A: I don't have the exact figures with me here, but on a bright full-sun day my exposures using a Canon 5D MKIV and Canon 70-200 2.8 IS was 30 seconds @ f/2.8, 200 ISO. Hope that helps!
Q: 5. How much do you have to compensate for light loss?
A: The R72 drops you down approximately 5 to 7 stops.
Q: 6. How well will this filter work in a snowy environment like Yellowstone in the winter?
A: While you can use an infrared filter to photograph snow, snow will still appear white. One issue with photographing in snowy conditions is the sky is normally overcast with clouds. The strongest infrared images tend to occur on clear, sunny days and with lots of foliage in the scene (foliage which is usually absent in the winter). That being said, if you capture images in the snow on a clear, sunny day and there are evergreen trees/bushes or other plants/trees that still have visible leaves that reflect infrared lighting, you would get dramatic images in these circumstances. Typically, when using the R72 infrared filter, the blue color of the sky will be darkened, while green foliage, like trees and grass, will appear in snow-like tones.
Q: 7. Will the lens cap work with the Xume system?
A: Yes, the Ice Magco 77mm Magnetic Lens Cap Set will work with matching sized Xume systems.
Q: 8. Is this a glass or film filter?
A: The Ice 77mm Solar Mc Nd100000 (Includes Magnetic Adapter Ring) is a glass filter.
Q: 9. I want an infrared filter for my 70 to 300 nikon VR lens and for a fixed 50 vr lens. What do I need?
A: Purchase the filter you want to fit the larger of the two lenses then buy an adapter (also called a step-up ring) for the smaller. For instance, if your 70-300 lens uses a 77mm filter and your 50 uses a 52mm filter then purchase the 77mm filter and a 52 to 77 step-up ring.
Q: 10. Is this compatible with Pentax K70?
A: The Hoya 62mm R72 Infrared Filter is compatible with the K70. As for results it will vary depending on settings and the scene/shot.
