The Apple 32" Pro Display XDR 16:9 Retina 6K HDR IPS Display is built with a 32" IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel featuring a 6016 by 3384 6K resolution with Retina display technology that produces crisp, vivid images. As somewhat of a one-size-fits-all solution, the Pro Display XDR is well suited for multitasking and its 6K resolution with a 32" viewing area is plenty to work with. For photo and design-focused users, it's a large canvas that lets you fit all your content, tools, and anything else you'd like, on one screen. Likewise, video editors and audio engineers can stretch out their workflow to get a macro-view of their project. As a cherry on top, its 218 ppi (pixels per inch) rating helps to deliver sharp and detailed images. The Pro Display XDR's main connectivity option is a single Thunderbolt 3 port, which supports up to 96W of host charging, and it has three USB 2.0 Type-C ports for charging and syncing other devices. With the power of Thunderbolt 3, users can daisy-chain up to six displays to their accompanying Mac Pro.

The Pro Display XDR has a sleek and refined all-aluminum chassis with 9mm borders. This reduction in bezel size offers a more immersive viewing experience whether you're hard at work or taking a breather. Either or, users can kick back and relax thanks to its wide viewing angles, which preserve color and image quality. The honeycomb design on the back is meant to act as a heatsink, which keeps it cool while operating at high brightness levels.

The Apple Pro Display XDR is available in two versions: one with a standard glass finish and another with nano-texture glass. Both are engineered for low reflectivity, but the nano-texture finish offers enhanced glare reduction for those who are a bit more sensitive or work under harsh lighting conditions.

XDR stands for Extreme Dynamic Range and is essentially HDR (High Dynamic Range) at Apple's standards. The backlighting consists of an array of 576 LEDs that can sustain a brightness level of 1000 nits and can even reach up to 1600 nits for a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio to truly emphasize the differences between light and dark.

Featuring a P3-wide color gamut and 10-bit color depth for 1.073 billion colors, the Pro Display is ideal for color-critical work. Additionally, its 576 LEDs are also individually calibrated and work with an algorithm that modulates their intensity to produce the best possible image.

To adapt to the variety of standards content creators work with in media such as digital cinema (P3-DCI), photography (P3-D65), HDTV video (BT.709-BT.1886), design and print (P3-D50), Internet and web (sRGB), etc., Reference Modes reconfigure the display to match. It optimizes values like color space, white point, gamma, and brightness. Alternatively, users can also set up their own custom profile as needed.

True Tone technology on the Pro Display XDR utilizes two ambient light sensors, one on the front and one on the back, to measure and then to adjust the color intensity of the display for accurate colors based on your environment.

Since the Pro Display XDR does not come with a stand, users can purchase either the Pro Stand or VESA adapter for mounting.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this Apple 32" Pro Display XDR connected to the latest M1 Mac Mini result in 6k resolution or 4k or ... ?

A: The Mac Mini M1 can support up to 1 6K display such as this one.

Q: 2. what are the parts that can be upgraded later

A: I upgraded from a iMac (late 2012) to a iMac Pro (late 2017). I would recommend purchasing a fully loaded iMac Pro that will meet all your needs now, and in the distant future. From my research, once the iMac Pro is constructed, it is sealed in such a way that a authorized technician will be required to minimize any damage and put your warranty in jeopardy. It appears you can have RAM upgraded, but it is not as easy to install, as in previous model iMacs.

Q: 3. can this monitor be used with the MacBook 12"?

A: The MacBook 12" has a single USB-C port. It is not a Thunderbolt port. As such, the XDR monitor is not compatible.

Q: 4. can this monitor used on windows 10 pc?

A: No. The Pro Display XDR is compatible with the following Mac models running macOS Catalina 10.15.2 or later: Mac Pro (2019) with MPX Module GPUs 15-inch MacBook Pro (2018 or later) 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) 21.5-inch iMac (2019) 27-inch iMac (2019) Any Mac model with Thunderbolt 3 ports paired with Blackmagic eGPU or Blackmagic eGPU Pro

Q: 5. Will this work with PCs?

A: No, this monitor would not work with a PC computer. It would only work with select Apple computers. The Monitor would have no controls or buttons and would need the Mac OS to function. .

Q: 6. Can the 27 iMac Pro with 1 TB SSD be reconfigured to 2 TB SSD in a couple of years?

A: Possibly but I personally would get an external ssd much cheaper. I Vesa mounted my iMac pro on the wall above my main monitor and an external drive behind the iMac on the wall out of sight with double sided tape

Q: 7. Can anyone recommend a hood and an alternative stand for this monitor?

A: A 32" monitor hood like BH #VIMH32S1 would be compatible with the Apple 32" Pro Display XDR. Alternative mounting options like B&H # ER45241224 would also be compatible.

Q: 8. Does the display comes with the screen ?

A: Yes, the display comes with the screen.

For starters - the build quality of this monitor (and stand) are second to none. It's everything that you would expect from an Apple product and it works beautifully with my MacPro. The image quality of the display is incredible - brilliant colors and sharp beyond any other monitor that I've used before. To be clear, however, there are other monitors that cost less that cover 99-100% of the RGB spectrum, whereas this monitor only covers 89-90% of the RGB spectrum and 100% of the SRGB spectrum. For my use as a photographer, I would like it to cover more of the RGB spectrum, but the accuracy is close enough that I'm happy with the results I get. Frankly, the functionality of the monitor, including its ability to transition to portrait mode automatically, is just as much a selling point to me as the color accuracy. Bottom line...this is an incredible monitor and if you can afford it, I'd highly recommend it.

I was not able to see this product in person before I purchased it. So I was a bit nervous making such a big purchase. sight unseen. But when I set it up and turned it on, I could not believe my eyes. This product is a thing of beauty. And, for those who spend 8-12 hours a day behind a monitor, this product is worth every penny. And the BH price was $1500 below buying it directly from Apple.

I purchased two of these displays to replace two 30 Apple Cinema Displays (in use for twelve years!). I am extremely pleased with these displays.

My use case is software development and general use. I tried the XDR with the nano-etched finish first. I am generally not a fan of glossy displays. My old Cinema Displays have a matte finish. So, I thought the nano XDR was the way to go for me. Boy, was I wrong. The nano does a fantastic job of killing any reflections, but it also kills the sharpness that one expects from a Retina display. It was a hazy mess for my use case.

So, I returned the nano model, and bought two of the standard model. THIS is what I wanted: 6K, Retina resolution, brightness, perfect color, thin bezel.

Even with five-star rating, I have two asks: NO bezel, and a *slight* matte finish--enough to kill most reflections, but that does not rob resolution.

Perfect out of the box, love the reference presets for demanding photography and video work. Best display I've ever used.

Although this display was released in 2019, it is still not out-of-date with over 1000nits illuminance and 6K resolution. I tried to find a cheaper replacement for one year before finally purchasing this one. However, the only replacement will be done by Apple itself maybe in 2023. Other miniled or oled monitors do not have such high resolution.

I had a 27 Dell that I was pretty happy with, however, I noticed that I could see more colors and details on my MBP then I could on my monitor which effected my design work. I picked up this display and I'm pretty amazed by the level of detail it's able to produce. The subtle differences in colors are visible, text is incredibly crisp, and although I was worried about my 13 MBP M1 chip powering this monitor, it's super smooth. Couldn't be happier.
