The Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone is compatible with Handycam camcorders, Cyber-Shot cameras, Alpha/NEX cameras, and any other camera that has a Sony Multi Interface Shoe. The Multi Interface Shoe passes the audio directly to your camera, so no additional cable is required. For use with cameras that don't have a Multi Interface Shoe, you can connect the microphone to the mic input jack on your camera using an included stereo mini-jack cable. The directional angle of the mic capsules can me manually adjusted from 0° to 120°, allowing you to fine-tune your audio capture according to the setting. Plus, an included windscreen enhances audio quality further by cutting down on wind noise pickup.

A: This is an X-Y stereo microphone. The width of the image can be changed by moving the elements farther apart and the sound quality is far better than the built-in mic in the cameras.

A: Check your manual, it may be connected through the horseshoe mount on top of you camera. However if it is, while you can get sound with you video, you may get camera noise when operating the zoom.

A: Yes. I use it on that camera weekly and it is FANTASTIC! MUCH better than the micro mics included on the body and the ability to shift the field from narrow to wide is great. Provides excellent quality and much better stereo spacial imaging. Also has cut and mic out features, which are nice if you want critical control.

I'm using a Sony A7RIII now for most of my video and this mic audio matches the camera's exceptional video quality.� I read one review that was very critical of this mic but having used it for 6 shoots now am sure the negative comments were due to operator error or the minescual chance of a defective product.� Buy this mic ! 5

We've already used the mic a few times with my a6000. It gives good, clean sound. Mic came with a inexpensive, but effective deadcat included, so the outdoor project was hiss free. 5

This is a hot shoe microphone, no wires, just attach and go. The directional mic is perfect for close ups and med shots of talking heads, great audio. Its a distinct advantage over the built in mic, no movement noise, no contact with the camera noise and very clean. I used it on several films, documentaries and commercials to get a live spontaneous feeling with the Sony A 6000, a great camera, and got great sound on every shot. Small and fast to set up, its a must have for the camera kit. A great buy. 5

It's a different concept as it requires no batteries, it's powered from the camera. Why is this important. Well, for me two reasons, the first being you cannot screw-up and forget to turn it on, its on when mounted on the camera. The second reason, if this is an occasional use mic batteries are a pain, you find yourself thinking, are they fresh, maybe they're dead or will they last the recording session? No issues with this mic, if your camera's rolling then the mic is working - as it should be. It may not be the best mic you can buy, but (and its a big but) if you attach this mic to your SONY you will get very decent audio most every time, it's pretty much immune to pilot error and therefore it has its proper place in my kit (as does the auto exposure setting on my mode dial). Size-wise, it's tiny. You could leave it in your pocket for those just-in-case moments. As with all these on-camera mics (or on-camera flash) I'd say being within 6-10 feet is the optimal working distance. My only complaint, even when mounted on a SONY smart-shoe equipped camera you still have to plug-in the 3.5mm cable to access the manual audio levels feature on the camera. Without the 3.5mm cable this mic is in full-auto mode, but it does appear to do a very good job is noisy environments! So to sum it up, if I were to take one mic out on a road-trip, I'd take this one, it'll just work. Fancy mics are obviously better, but how many times have you heard a video guy say, well the audio isn't too good in the clip, I didn't have the levels set properly -- no issues here (without the 3.5mm cable), you'll be in full auto and in the ball park. KISS! 5

I use this on my NEX-6 An it Works Great! big improvement over camera mics i find myself doing a lot more video an its always been a disappointment that the NEX-6 has no external mic port. 5
