Multi-layer anti-reflection coating for efficient light intake and reduced flare, plus high-reflectivity silvered coating and a protective antioxidant layer on the back side of mirrored surfaces for long performance life.

Minimum focusing distance of 45.27" and magnification 0.4x can capture small objects, while the 400mm focal length reduces the possibility of casting a shadow on the subject

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Last question, I think. I currently use, for "distance" photo, a 55-200 Nikkor. Going from this to this 400mm, is it too much of a difference regarding quality and distance? (not sure how much difference there is between 200 and 400mm). Additionally, in image the lens seems "small", when comparing to vivitar 500mm. Is it that size or you have to "open" it?

A: This lens would be double the magnification of your 55-200mm at the 200mm end. This lens would be more compact that the Vivitar 500mm lens. Please feel free to reach out to us directly via Live Chat or e-mail to askbh@bhphoto.com with any other questions you may have.

Q: 2. Regarding previous question between vivitar 500mm and this one, how much is the difference on optical quality, when saying this one is better? And how much distance difference does the 100mm make?

A: This lens is multi-coated against lens flare and reflections, which makes it better than the Vivitar 500mm T-Mount lens. Having the added range on the Vivitar lens may not seem like much, but it could help when you need to get a bit closer to the subject.

Q: 3. Does this include a t-mount adapter, or is that purchased separately?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Canon EF has a Canon EF mount. It is not a T mount lens.

Q: 4. Has anyone used this lens on a 90D or another camera that doesn't have focus peaking or vibration control? If so, were you able to get reasonably sharp photos without camera shake being an issue?

A: It's definitely going to be a bit more difficult focusing with a 90D or DSLR that doesn't have stabilization or focus peaking. I would recommend using a tripod and a shutter remote to maximize stability. Even with focus peaking and stabilization, the lens still requires critical focusing.

Q: 5. Could you use this for photographing the moon, or non-moving wildlife?

A: Yes, you will have to bump up your iso to compensate for the small aperture of f/8.

Q: 6. Will focus peaking work when mounyed to a OLY OMD EM1 mkII?

A: Focus Peaking will work on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Micro Four Thirds.

Q: 7. Is it necessary to post-produce a lot (sharpening, contrast, etc) your original file from this lens to get something good ?

A: It would really depend on how the focus and exposure was done in camera.

Q: 8. I am planning to order one for my d750. Will the f-mount come with it Fit a z mount? Or is there a separate z mount adapter available?

A: The lens is a Nikon F mount lens. If you want to use it on a different camera than the D750. Like a Nikon Z mount, you will need to get an adapter. This is one option for a lens adapter, Nikon FTZ Mount Adapter BH #NIFTZ • MFR #4185 https://bhpho.to/37kPGgs Note, the lens is manual only and it is not full frame. Used on your D750, it will crop the image by 1.5 times. And you will lose a lot of resolution.

Q: 9. Have a Nikon D3100. Would this one work for it? Do I need something else? Additionally, is this one better than the vivitar 500mm? Which one is better for landscape photos, or moon photos? or wildlife (say, birds) from afar?

A: To use this lens on the Nikon D3100 in order to shoot subjects that are very far, the Vello T-Mount Lens to Nikon F-Mount Camera Lens Adapter, BH # VELANFT is needed. Although the optical quality is better on this lens, it would offer less range versus a Vivitar 500mm T-mount lens. https://bhpho.to/2KGl6ow

Q: 10. I just got this lens for an Olympus EM1-ii. Can't seem to get the focus peaking to work. Works fine with the one other manual focus lens I have. Is there some limitation with being 400mm or f/8?

A: According to Olympus, they state this must be an isolated lens issue. There is no in-camera reason for lack of focus peaking. You simply need to customize a button to focus peaking usage. Tap the selected customized button to turn on focus peaking, and tap the button again to turn off the focus peaking feature. If there is still no focus peaking, then it is really a lens issue as focus peaking depends on contrast to work; no electrical lens contacts are needed.

The Tokina SZX 400 F8 Reflex MF Lens is a good addition to my gear. I've recently become interested in nature photography, but not interested in dragging heavy equipment.

The Tokina SZX is light and compact. Build quality is excellent. The focusing is smooth and clean. It comes with a good sunshade, threads on, fits over the lens when off, but doesn't stay put and would fall off. You'll need a lens bag to carry it.

The pictures are relatively sharp, far superior to other white label mirror lenses.

You have to watch two factors: camera shake and extremely shallow depth of field. I find myself up at 1/400 minimum shutter, and up at 1/1600th often enough.

As others have noted, this is a non-coupling lens. My D7000 thinks it's an F3 but it's not, it's F8.

It can resolve down to wisps of hair at a good distance.

The lens flares badly shooting into backlit subjects, more than most lenses.

I plan on buying another as a gift to a birdwatcher!

Because I never had the funds to get one of those high powered expensive lenses years ago I found a cheep 500mm reflex lens. With practice I was able to get good to great pictures with it so I decided to try the Tokina SZX, also far less expensive than those dream lenses. It is actually a bit easier to focus than the old reflex lens and does it ever capture great pictures! It also feels like a quality lens and isd so smooth. If you want more power and don't have a thousand bucks give this Tokina 400mm a try, you won't be disapointed.

The Tokina SZX for my Nikon D80 arrived today. Very impressed with quality of the lens in terms of mechanical operation and even more with the results. Attached is a Woodpecker on our bird feeder. Note the sharpness of the eye. Birds to not hold still and pose for you but every once in a while , you can hit the right moment. My new lens made that possible on the first day of use. Highly reccommended.

I waited for this lens for couple of month. But it was worth it. I am using my Tokina on Fujifilm X-T3. The lens is light and compact. Focus ring is smooth. But depth of field is quite shallow and you need to really feather it. Reflector design limits the sharpness, I guess, but I took test photos only without a tripod yet. Perhaps on with a tripod, good lighting and precise focusing, sharpness will be on par with the refractors.
