I know that, as a modeling lamp, they're meant to be easy on the subject's eyes and keep them dilated in between strobe flashes, while emitting just enough light to satisfy the auto-focus needs of the camera. But, as an alternative, I've sucessfully used the long, slim G.E. LED Brightstiks which are daylight balanced to 5000K and fit the E26/27-style base in most strobes. Lumen ratings are limited to 760-1100, however, so you'll give up quite a bit of brightness. I don't find that to be too much of a problem and actually think it's easier on the subject's eyes not having to adapt back and forth from warm to cool light. They support consistent auto white balance, too.
