Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Shure SM7B will work with the Roland R-26 recorder? Shure reports that SM7B requires a minimum of 59 dB gain. Rolnad R-26 in the specification has a -62dBu output level.

A: The DB range looks good on paper but you're going to be maxed out and get a quiet level that will make buying such a nice mic pointless. You'll need a pre-amp like a Cloudlifter or a Triton Audio Fethead in-line preamp (the cheaper option). Do NOT use phantom power on the Shure SM7B unless you want to ruin it. I use my Shure SM7B in my home studio with a DBX 286s preamp/processor. It's about $200 but it makes my audio national broadcast quality.

Q: 2. I have a Mix Pre3 preamp; will I need a Cloudlifter to increase gain (to avoid buzz), or will the Mix Pre3 be fine on its own with the SM7B?

A: The Sound Devices MixPre-3 II Audio Recorder pairs quiet Kashmir preamps with 70dB of gain range, making it one of the few devices that can be used with the Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone without the need for a Cloudlifter.

Q: 3. If I buy the broadcast kit do all of the parts come in their original boxes or is it all repackaged together?

A: All of the parts come in their original boxes.

Q: 4. Where is it made?

A: The Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone is made in Mexico.

Q: 5. If I use this mic with Rodecaster Pro do I need a preamp?

A: You will not need to use a separate pre-amp, however, because the SM7B is a very low gain microphone it is recommended to use a Cloud Lifter, which will increase gain by 25 dB so that you do not have to turn the gain on the Rodecaster all the way up, which will introduce noise. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1177578-REG/cloud_microphones_cl_1_cloudlifter_mic_activator.html

Q: 6. Need a recommendation for a voice mic to use with an M BOX Mini currently using a SHURE PE 515, I also have a SHURE 545L which I have not tried. Or, if I get a Shure SM7B will I be able to use my Passport 150 Pro as a pre-amp for the M BOX Mini?

A: The Shure SM7B is very low in natural since its a dynamic mic it needs alot of gain from your M BOX asnd doing so will introduce hiss from the M BOX bringing noise level up. The best we can advice is to get a cloud lifter and this will eliminate and hiss giving you a 25db of a boost.

Q: 7. I have this microphone (Shure SM7B) - connected via an XLR cable/connector to a 28s pream/processor, then - from there via an xlr/cable connector into the XLR receptical (Mic1) into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - USB Audio Interface box - then into the PC via a USB connector from the Focusrite (which I use just for the interface to the PC). I can't seem to get enough power out of the microphone for the levels to be at a normal (-12db) level in my recording software (Audition, and/or Captivate 8). I leave all of the processing in the 286 off... and just use the preamp phantom power feed to the microphone of 48v, with a 3/4 of total gain, then I also added gain at the Scarlite USB interface redbox. Still not enough to hear the microphone clearly. Any coaching tips? (Novice here). I've also tried adding gain -

A: As this is a dynamic microphone, no additional pre-amp or phantom power is requires. make sure phantom power on your interface is switched OFF . Recheck your cables for continuity as well.

Q: 8. If I use this mic with the mackie 1202vlz4 audio mixer, do I still need a pre-amp compressor?

A: That mixer has a mic preamp already so the SM7B will work fine with it.

Q: 9. How about feedback? Does it get much feedback?

A: No, the PGA58 is not prone to feedback. Its cardioid polar pattern focuses on the user's voice while rejecting unwanted background noise and delivers a clear and natural tone.

Q: 10. does this grille fit a shure sm58 microphone?

A: We can not guarantee compatibility with an SM58. For a guaranteed replacement for the SM58, here is this grill BH #SHRK143G.

It works, helps improve my voice, enjoy the fact there are analog switches on the back to try out different ways the mic picks up audio input.

Obviously when paying this much money for your mic, you are getting something that is top of the line. This definitely lives up to that standard, and works perfectly for my stream! Only can say great things about the quality and the look!

OK, I'm not a musician or even a podcaster. But I was on Zoom calls all day long, even before the pandemic. While the SM7B may be overkill for video conferencing, my WFH setup isn't exactly ideal. I am in a corner of our dining area, which is between the living room and the kitchen. So there's a lot of background noise happening in my household while I'm on calls. I was using the Rode NT-USB mic, but it was too sensitive and picked up the sounds of my teenager getting water from the fridge or heating up a snack in the microwave. I needed to clean up my act and sound a bit more professional.

So after watching hours of reviews and comparison videos on YouTube, I decided to splurge on the SM7B. I am pairing it with the Motu M2 audio interface, and I freaking love this setup! And I like how the SM7B gives my voice a little more bass so I can sound a bit more authoritative.

Also, my wife, kids and I have been having fun recording with the mic. Just taking some karaoke tracks and laying our own (mostly terrible) vocals on top of them. This mic has

While I’m not a professional audio engineer (I’m a cameraman and editor), but as far as I can tell this package is great. I’m starting to get into voiceover and podcasting, and this mic gives a clean, strong signal into my Rode Padcaster. It’s good at filtering out excess noise. I’m amazed by the quality.

This mic sounds great on just about every voice, which is why everyone is using them. Just make sure you have a good preamp or a cloudlifter for best results.
