Tiffen Combination Light Balancing 81ef/nd Filter (72mm, 3-stop)

The 3-stop, 72mm Tiffen Combination Light Balancing 81EF/ND Filter combines the effects of an 81EF light balancing filter with a neutral density filter. An 81EF filter, the strongest in the 81 series, will more than replace the yellow missing from the image and place all skin tones on a distinctly "warmish" level. Neutral density filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light entering the lens. They have no effect on color balance and are very useful when you want to shoot high-speed film outdoors on a very bright day.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminum rings. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process.

- Enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
- Decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their backgrounds
- Allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand, or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors - ND 0.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
- ND 0.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
- ND 0.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)

Q: 6. Has anybody tried this filter on an Panasonic FZ300, or for that matter FZ200?
A: Coenraad, thanks for your interest in the Tiffen VND filter. The X Bar effect you mentioned is a product of optical physics and happens with all VND filters when operated outside their intended parameters. VND filters consist of two polarizing filters, as you twist one polarizer in relation to another you create the VND effect. The X Bar typically happens when you are shooting the filter at darker densities and you are using a wide focal length, this will be more common on full frame sensor cameras instead of cropped sensor cameras. To eliminate the X Bar effect you should reduce the density setting of the VND, change your focal length by zooming on more or a combination of both until the effect disappears.
Q: 7. I usually use 0.9 Tiffen ND filters for DSLR video. I am able to get a shallow aperture in bright conditions. How much more beneficial would this filter be for me for video, as well as photography?
A: I can't help you with the video, but I use it a lot in my still photography because it gives you maximum creative control in/of such a wide variety of light conditions. Reduce depth, slow the movement of water or action or whatever as little or as much as you want - with one filter. I used to have to carry a number of ND filters and then it was an on-off affair until I found the one I wanted - by which time the light had often changed! The filter's quality is excellent and the filter is really smooth to operate. Yeah, it's pricey - but not when you consider that it's replacing three or four fixed ND filters in the range it covers. I hope I helped you. Good luck with your search. (Can't go wrong with B&H either. I've been a customer for over 30 years.)
Q: 8. can i mount a rubber lens hood on the front ?
A: Yes...the 67mm version has 77mm threads on the front so you could mount a threaded lens hood.
Q: 9. Hello, i'd like to know if this ND filter would fit in the sony 18-105 F4 G, according to the lens specifications the is 72 mm, so it would be fine, but i wanna make sure
A: Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter BH #TIVND72 will fit Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens BH #SO181054 perfectly.
Q: 10. Will 52 mm work for 50mm prime lens?
