This 2- to 5-stop, 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND Filter from PolarPro is designed for lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 2- to 5 stops. The 0.6 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing the exposure time, you convey movement or increase the blur. By increasing the aperture, the image depth of field can be more easily controlled. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring features a numbered scale of the stop values, and it also features haptic feedback to feel a click when reaching a number without the need to look at the ring. The ring features side knurling for a secure grip, enabling fast and precise positioning, and it is designed to prevent any rotation beyond the stop values etched on it.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of antireflective coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings also provide improved beading when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz optics are set within an aluminum alloy filter ring assembly for lightweight durability. The unique Defender 360 hybrid case/cover is included for storage and transport and acts as both a front cap when the filter is in place on a lens and as a rigid dustproof and waterproof storage case by adding the rear cover when the filter is not in use.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the outside diameter? I need it to fit inside of a SmallRig mini matte box. My 82mm tiffin is too wide at 98mm. I believe it has to be less than 95mm to be compatible.

A: We measured this at the store and it measured 89.5mm on across the front element.

Q: 2. Where can I buy the mist edition of this?

A: The Polar Pro 2-5 stop Pro-Mist Variable ND (PMVND) filter is available here: https://bhpho.to/3L0gnHE

Q: 3. Why would one choose 2-5 over 6-9 or vice versa? If I can only choose one which one would it be and why?

A: It all depends on what you are shooting, the type of lens you have and the lighting conditions, etc... If you have a very fast lens and it is very bright outside, then the 6-9 is more appropriate.

Q: 4. Are all the original accessories included unless otherwise stated, or might some accessories be missing?

A: The PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 1.8 to 2.7 Filter (6 to 9-Stop) is an 82mm screw on filter. And does not come with accessories as none are needed to use it. it does come with, Defender 360 Filter Cover/Case and a Cleaning Cloth.

Q: 5. this reduce IR?

A: Unfortunately, this filter does not block IR.

Q: 6. is it a polarizer filter as well?

Q: 7. Can you have half stop e.g. 2.5, 3.5 etc without incurring problem with this VND?

A: You can indeed! with the way the glass is designed on these filters, you don't run into any of the X cross pattern problems.

Q: 8. What is the difference between a filter 2 to 5 stops to a filter 6 to 9 stops…?

A: The PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5-Stop) reduces exposure on your camera from 2 to 5 stops, while the PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 1.8 to 2.7 Filter (6 to 9-Stop) starts at a much higher density. The exposure is reduced from 6-9 stop.

If you are trying to decide between this one and the pro mist, go with this one. I went pro mist first and regret it. It is just barely misty and only looks unsharp. this one is much better imo.

Recently purchased and used on an on location for a video production during daylight hours. Found it extremely well built, no color shift through all stops, no vignetting. Environment was windy and at times quite dusty so the filter had to be cleaned frequently. Using a blower and fiber wipe (included) I had no scratching (although you could if not careful). The detent clicks made the filter very easy to confidently set. The rubberized lens cap also has a nice rear screw-on cover holder on the back side to keep the cap and cover together while the filter is being used. A great purchase that made a significant enhancement on the project.

I don't see why I'll ever remove this from my Lumix S Pro 50mm. Maybe only for the 6 to 9-Stop for really bright outdoor conditions.

I tried others before and there was always some crazy vignetting that you can't remove in post. I don't see that here at all.

If you need, and why wouldn't you, to open up your aperture... get them.

I'm now thinking of buying the mist edition just to take that clinical look away from the sharp, modern lenses that I use.

Like myself, I'm sure you've gone down the "Best VND filter" rabbit hole like I did to find most people (on YouTube) praising this PolarPro Peter McKinnon VND filter as the best. The feel of the build is premium. You have a very sturdy, knurled rotating ring to adjust between the 2-5 stops and it's very smooth yet has enough resistance to let you know it's turning. You feel a "click" when adjusting between stops so you don't get any vignetting. Absolutely recommend.

I don't see why I'll ever remove this from my Lumix S Pro lenses. I bought two of these, one for the 24-70 f2.8 and the other for the 70-200 f2.8.

Really happy with this purchase! I haven't notice any color shift or clarity issues and gives me a nice range of ND. I haven't had to use the 5-Stop yet, but this is by far the best VND I have used. Love the haptic feedback and protective cap it comes with. Overall, feels very nice and does exactly what I need it to!
