This 6- to 9-stop, 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND Filter from PolarPro is designed for lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 6- to 9 stops. The 1.8 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing the exposure time, you convey movement or increase the blur. By increasing the aperture, the image depth of field can be more easily controlled. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring features a numbered scale of the stop values, and it also features haptic feedback to feel a click when reaching a number without the need to look at the ring. The ring features side knurling for a secure grip, enabling fast and precise positioning, and it is designed to prevent any rotation beyond the stop values etched on it.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of antireflective coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings also provide improved beading when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz optics are set within an aluminum alloy filter ring assembly for lightweight durability. The unique Defender 360 hybrid case/cover is included for storage and transport and acts as both a front cap when the filter is in place on a lens and as a rigid dustproof and waterproof storage case by adding the rear cover when the filter is not in use.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you have half stop e.g. 2.5, 3.5 etc without incurring problem with this VND?

A: You can indeed! with the way the glass is designed on these filters, you don't run into any of the X cross pattern problems.

Q: 2. Does this have hard stops?

A: This filter does not have hard stops. The markings are for reference only.

Q: 3. Why would one choose 2-5 over 6-9 or vice versa? If I can only choose one which one would it be and why?

A: It all depends on what you are shooting, the type of lens you have and the lighting conditions, etc... If you have a very fast lens and it is very bright outside, then the 6-9 is more appropriate.

Q: 4. The filter thread is 67mm on the glass side, but what is the width across the front side, it should be slightly larger than 67mm?

A: According to the manufacturer, the diameter of the filter would be 73.6mm.

Q: 5. Does the V1 have issues with filming windows and dark color too?

A: This filter would not exhibit issues with filming windows or dark colors.

Q: 6. Can you stack another filter on top?

A: PolarPro 67mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5-Stop) does not have front threads so unfortunately you cannot stack another filter on top.

Q: 7. Is this the Mist Edition or the Signature Edition?

A: This filter is from the PolarPro Signature Edition II line. :)

Q: 8. Will this filter allow the hood to be used with the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L lens? Is their any colour shift, image loss of detail, or vignetting when using this filter with that lens?

A: The lens hood for the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L Lens can still be used along with this filter. However, it is best to adjust the filter to the desired setting prior to attaching the hood.

Q: 9. Will the lens hood of Sony 70-200 GMII fit over the filter?

A: No, the PolarPro 77mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 1.8 to 2.7 Filter (6 to 9-Stop) will not fit the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens with a lens hood.

Q: 10. Can this filter be used with a lens hood?

A: Most likely yes it will work with the lens hood but it also depends on which lens you are using.

After trying out a handful of more budget friendly options in variable NDs, this one blows all of them out of the water. Its worth the extra bucks for this filter, for sure.

I dont really care about the Peter McKinnon name on it, that's not what drew me to this filter, but the haptic feedback at each stop and the lack of cross x pattern is for me my I bought this.

I'm not seeing any of that dreaded x in my video or photo files. And to me, that's a huge sell. I purchased both the 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop models and didnt see any of that x in both.

Something that I liked from looking at it on the site was the protective case, but didnt think it would make a huge difference. But I was underestimating how great of an added feature the case truly is. As someone that shoots primarily outdoors and a variety of less than ideal conditions out here in Wyoming, these cases have been so nice to have. Don't have to worry about a flimsy case or an easily scratched filter. These hold up to all the weather elements and high alpine ecosystem I've put it through.

This is easily one of my most recommended products now.

But wow. The filter itself is much better than some other $100 variable ND's I've used in the past. It might not be the very best out there, but it is close enough that I can't tell the difference (not exactly the biggest expert, but have been shooting weddings for 3 years now). My favorite thing, though, is how thoughtful the design is. It's made so you never have to really touch the filter until it is on the camera and ready to use. The rubber cap that easily is removed and put back on to protect the filter when using a bunch of step-up rings means I don't have to take the filter off, put on a lens cap, put the filter into a sleeve, and then repeat in reverse and again a million times on a wedding day. I am planning on getting at least one more.

The most difficult part of first using the filter is opening the case. The case is amazing, but not intuitive. Follow the online instructions and you'll be as amazed as I was at how they devised a way to install the filter on your camera lens without touching it--and returning it to storage without touching it. Very clever.

But the proof is in the photography. I've only used the filter once--a pastel-colored dawn ocean scene--but I put it through its paces. The ND ratings seem right on point and the color rendition of final photos is truly neutral. It is so easy to use, it's a no-brainer.

Yes, it's expensive, until you think about it.

Minimal vignetting, and the 2 to 5-stop range means I can shoot HLG and standard video at ISO 12-300 outside in broad daylight and use f-stops down to 4 or 5. I don't do much photography, but if I wanted to, I would add a 7 or 8 stop fixed ND to my kit along with this adjustable one to shoot down into the f.2 range in the same conditions. For video where a deeper depth of field is desired, this is perfect for outdoor work.
FYI, get the larger 82mm and pick up step-down rings to adapt to smaller lenses. Much cheaper than a filter for each.

I just used this filter for the first time last weekend on a client shoot at an outdoor pool. Not only did it perform amazingly in direct sunlight, it was easy to adjust the f-stops when a cloud would pass by. The colors are BEAUTIFUL and the ease of use was fantastic.

I'm also a sucker for packaging, and the way this is packaged and protected even when it's on your camera (hello beautiful and easy to take on and off rubber cover) allows you to not have to worry about fingerprints or finding a lens cap that fits.

I can't wait to use it on all of my outdoor shoots!

I'm new to VND, but the quality and manufacture of this filter is great. It helps tremendously with my A7Siii and allows me to maintain proper shutter speeds in everything except the most full sun situations. In that scenario I would need a bit more strength, but I can get by with only this one filter.
