Power, connectivity, and reliability, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 is an on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II-compatible flash characterized by its flexibility to suit a variety of lighting needs. Featuring a xenon flashtube, greater exposure stability is possible along with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and versatile exposure control from full 1/1 power down to 1/8192 power. Also distinct, the EL-1 utilizes the LP-EL rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack to promote shorter recycle times of around 0.9 sec, approximately 335 flashes per charge, and it contributes to improved thermal management and the flash's active cooling system.

The EL-1 fully supports EL-series RT flashes via its built in radio trigger and receiver. It can trigger up to 15 RT-series receiver Speedlites to produce light freely even when not attached to the camera. For even more creative possibilities, the EL-1 features Second-Curtain Sync.

The flash has a rugged physical design equivalent to the dust and water-resistance of the EOS-1D-series camera bodies. Its improved user interface incorporates an updated joystick design, display, and control layout and it features a tunable LED modeling lamp to help previsualize the lighting. Additionally, the flash head can fully swivel 180° left and right, bounce upward 120°, and it includes a built-in wide panel.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will these work with any of the 5d mark ii, iii or iv series?

A: The Speedlite EL-1 is compatible with any of the 5D series of cameras.

Q: 2. Canon wireless

A: Yes, if you use the Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver. 2) on the hot shot of a canon camera you could use this flash off camera as long as the camera shoe is 5 pin. The new multifunction hot shoes may require an adapter.

Q: 3. is this compatible with the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT II Wireless Speedlite Transmitter?

A: Canon does not comment on compatibility with third party triggers. And as firmware come up it could stop the third-party trigger from working. Best is to use one of these triggers, https://bhpho.to/3zxKbpI

Q: 4. Can the flash be remotely triggered using the Pocket wizard Plus lll ?

A: Yes you can but you would need another pocket wizard to connect to the sync port on the Canon EL-1, but then you can trigger it remotely with the Pocket Wizard Plus III.

Q: 5. Is this flash compatible with the ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter and EOS 1Dx Mk III? Is the transmitter needed with this camera?

A: Yes, this works with the STE3RT and the 1DxIII works directly without a transmitter.

Q: 6. Will Canon also release a new upgrade transmitter along with EL1?

A: As of the date/time of this reply, Canon has not announced a new wireless radio transmitter. Canon states that the Canon EL-1 Speedlite Flash is compatible with Canon's RT wireless radio transmission system, and as such, would be compatible for use with the current Canon ST-E3-RT Wireless Radio Transmitter, as well as the Canon 600EX II-RT, 600EX-RT, and the 430EX III-RT Speedlite Flashes for wireless radio triggering usage needs.

Q: 7. Does anyone know how to activate the modeling lamp for remote EL-1's? I've tested between two EL-1's and hitting the Lamp button only activates the modeling lamp on the speedlight you pressed the button on.

A: The only way to be able to activate the modeling lamp on both of the EL-1's would be to use the Canon transmitter and control both from there. But sadly from testing, there does not appear to be any way to turn the modeling lamp of an EL-1 on from another EL-1.

Q: 8. Will this flash fire off the ad200Pro?

A: Yes, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 can set off any other flash that has an optical slave. The AD200pro has an optical slave. But the AD200pro will be only manual and not have High speed sync. And you will not be able to change the power on the AD200pro from the on-camera EL-1.

Q: 9. Do this flash Is it controllable wirelessly by the flash 430EX III-RT?

A: Yes, the 430EX III RT will communicate with the EL-1.

Q: 10. I can't figure out how to get the IR beam activate with any flash I currently own with the Canon R5. Is it neccisary to use this flash in order to get the beam in a dark room?

A: Unfortunately, infrared auto-focus assist beams will not trigger or work in tandem with mirrorless cameras. This is unfortunately a limitation of mirrorless technology.

I shoot weddings mostly and have had four RT600 flashes since 2014 as my workhorses. Love them but hated all the batteries. I shoot receptions with two off camera flashes mostly on manual and one flash on each R6 body in TTL or manual. I bought two of these new EL-1 units as I had a huge dark barn wedding. I threw the four RT 600s up high on 1/8 power and used the new flashes on my two cameras. After a long hard night of work I still had 35% battery in both EL-1 flashes and they never missed a beat. I'm gonna keep the old RT600s for off camera and beach engagement sessions in case they get knocked over. But for on camera where they work hard this is a dream. They are little bigger but I have Think Tank Airport roller and they fit ok. I had a windy engagement session and threw an EL-1 on a nightstand bare to pop a little light this weekend. I had no assistant so a soft box was not gonna work in windy Chicago. Again the flash just worked and recycled so fast. Way faster recycle than the RT600 flashes. Yes they are expensive, but they last. I tired off brand for a while as extra off camera and after 45 weddings they died. My canon 600s have done hundreds and still keep going and I am sure these will last years too. If you are a pro these are the way to go in my opinion. I like the smaller tungsten light modifier too. I use it at receptions nearly every wedding. I will probably get two more next year and save all the batteries I have to carry, but for now the ^00s work seamlessly for off camera.

Provides a lot of light in a small package. It is larger and heavier than its predecessors.

This is a monster flash. However, it's not as heavy and bulky as some people describe. At first it seemed so, but then I got used to it. And I do not carry it on the camera all the time.
Love the battery. It lasts me almost the whole wedding with the heavy flash bouncing before I have to change it.
The pouch that comes with this camera is an awful peace of garbage though. Canon made a ridiculous flash pouch monstrosity with an additional compartment for the filters on top of the pouch. Seriously? Whoever designs pouches for Canon should be fired on spot. Canon attached a tiny loop to the back of the pouch which is totally useless. How about making the kind of pouch that Godox makes for its round head flash, and how about making the filter compartment detachable? I had to go and by a Think Tank Speedlight pouch and use the canon one for storing a TABLE TRIPOD.

I only have one word for this unit FANTASTIC .
Having shot over 1000 weddings with the old school vivitar 285 & 283 modified for gel cells, as my on bracket flash, I gotta say this light is light years ahead of even the latest speed light strobes, for an on camera mount. Buy it now!!! It's worth more than it's pricetag.

I took the plunge and purchased this flash as an upgrade to the 600EXII-RT. 1st use was at a 6 hour event that included outdoor and indoor locations with varying lighting. I was thoroughly impressed at how the flash could easily keep up with 12 fps and maintain the same light levels. Never did the flash have to stop and cool down. This outperforms the 600 quite handily.
Battery life was also great. I took around 600 flash photos (not all at full power), and I still have 4 bars on the battery indicator. E-TTL II works wonderfully, applying just the perfect amount of flash, even as fill-flash for backlit scenes.
I also found the modeling lamp useful as a video light in a pinch. Not designed for this use, but I was able to video a single subject on the dancefloor quite well.
The flash is very robust as well, and I can rest assured a spilled drink or light rain won't hurt it.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this high-end flash!

I recently switched for a 1DX2 to a R5 and obviously my 600RT was struggling to keep up. After watching a few videos and seeing this used in the burst mode I was settled. I am glad I purchased this along with the R5 as I do a lot of fast moving photography. It is excellent and the menu is simple to navigate and adjust the flash. The model mode is very helpful.
