Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have much focus breathing?

A: The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens (Sony E) has significant focus breathing.

Q: 2. Has the autofocus speed improved over that of the Sigma 70mm macro that some people complained about?

A: Sigma has improved the auto-focus on the new 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens for Sony E. The Hypersonic Motor delivers smooth, quiet, confident autofocus in both close-up and portrait-distance settings. There is a three-zone focus limiter switch that allows for even swifter response when focusing exclusively in either the macro or more distant range.

Q: 3. Is there any compatible tripod collar for this lens?

A: According to Sigma, there is no compatible lens collar for this lens.

Q: 4. Does the Sigma 105mm have a mechanical focus lock to prevent focus drift when shooting vertically?

A: Yes there is a lock switch for the focus ring.

Q: 5. Can the aperture be controlled within the camera, or is it manual aperture control only?

A: You may control the aperture using the built in aperture ring or in the body.

Q: 6. Does this lens have manual focus override while the switch on the lens is in autofocus mode with the Leica SL/SL2-S like my Sigma 24mm/35mm and 65mm DG DN Contemporary lenses have?

A: Yes, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens for Leica L has manual focus override while in autofocus mode.

Q: 7. How well will this work in an indoor even with low light?

A: In terms of light gathering capabilities, this f/2.8 lens does gather a lot of light. A f/2.8 is a larger aperture that lets more light through then lets say an f/4 lens. In terms of focusing in low light, that will depend on the specific camera used.

Q: 8. When shooting close in macro does the lens barrel extend out like Sigma's 70mm macro lens does?

A: The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens (Sony E) extends and additional 3mm when focused to the minimum focus setting.

Q: 9. Does the L-mount version of this lens support Focus Ring ControlLinear Focus? This feature was recently added to the 70mm DG Art macro, but I can find zero information as to whether it is supported on this lens. There is a Sigma list of compatible lenses, dated 2/22, but the 70 macro, which IS supported, is not on the list, so the list is not to be trusted.

A: No, as of February 2022 the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens for Leica L does not have the “Focus Ring Control” function that allows users to change the movement of the focus ring to either linear or non-linear.

Q: 10. Does it work with extension tube? such as https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1454645-REG/vello_ext_sfed2_auto_extension_tubes_for.html/overview. So it can get 2:1 or 3:1 image

A: Yes, but due to the amount of variation in lenses, there might be some slight performance differences during autofocus.

While I've only had the lens for a bit more than a week, I am pleasantly surprised with its performance, so far. Like my other Sigma lens, the image is sharp and the and the color rendition is good. So far, I've experimented with the lens for table-top photography and the results are quite good. The lens plays very well with My SL2, which I typically use in manual mode. One difference I've noted thus far is that the lens cannot be automatically focused using the joy stick when in manual mode, but it plays well with the auto enlarge feature of the SL2 to allow for precise focusing. The lens is also recognized in Capture One, making tethered shooting a breeze, including focus stacking.

All-in-all, it's a great companion to my Leica lenses and provides a nice low-cost prime lens to carry in the field. I'm looking forward to using the lens more, both in the studio and in the field, when spring returns.

I bought this lens specifically for scanning film after reading other reviews. If that is what you're looking for, don't hesitate, it's sharp and the auto focus finds the film surface fast. Once it is focused on the film, I switch to manual to just hold focus where it is and quickly snap each frame of film! It's perfect for this. Sharp from center to edge as you would want. Color reproduction is spot on.
The lens of course is awesome for regular macro purposes with amazing images.

This is quickly becoming my favorite lens. For this price point I'm super impressed with it. I use this for product photography primarily, but also have used it for street photography. The bokeh is great and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new art lens. The aperture control being right on the lens is also super helpful for street photography. Overall, super impressed.

I used my Sony A7 RIII to capture a crab spider and was able to print a sharp looking 11X14. It was on autofocus & handheld while gripping a monopod. The critter's body is about 2mm. ISO 1000 f18 @1/13 sec
