Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Anyone actually getting 2000MB/s? I'm using this with a Thunderbolt 4 cable directly into my M1 max Thunderbolt port and I get 950MB/s...

A: Max speed is under optimal conditions. File format and size of files can have impact on the actual sustained transfer speeds.

Q: 2. Can you buy extensions cords for these?

A: The SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 can work with either a longer USB cable or with a USB extension cable.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)?

A: Yes this SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is compatible with a MacBook Pro. You may have to format the drive.

Q: 4. Can anyone weigh in on real-world sustained read and write speeds? Anyone experience heat throttling? Considering the Pro V2 or T5 for mobile video editing of ProRes RAW files.

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is Up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds. The Samsung T5 is Up to 540 MB/s Data Transfer Rate. If you are concerned about speed, the SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 would be the right one for you.

Q: 5. If I pair this with a MacStudio for storing my RAW files for editing in Lightroom will I be happy with the speed?

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 has up to 2000MB/s speed.

Q: 6. How would you mount this drive to a hot shoe ?

A: Since there is no display on the drive, I would not recommend mounting it on the shoe. But if you wanted to mount it on the shoe, you can use a shoe adapter such as this Vello: https://bhpho.to/3EINjl5 plus a smart phone tripod adapter such as this Magnus: https://bhpho.to/3CHubmG.

Q: 7. Will this work with Ursa Mini Pro G2?

A: Yes, it will work but be aware of the supported frame rates and formats.

Q: 8. The Mac Mini M1 has Thunderbolt3/USB4/USB3.1Gen2. What speed should I get with this Extreme Pro V2 drive USB 3.2 Gen 2x2?

A: Due to some compatibility issue with M1 Mac computers and USB 3.2 2x2 configuration, users have reported speeds of around 1,000 - 1250 MB/s when using the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 with these machines.

Q: 9. Is this correct - basically 2000 vs 200 read speeds? I'm comparing drives to edit 4k video. "Up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds"? I'm considering the SanDisk Professional 4TB G-DRIVE PRO External HDD (Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.2 Gen1, Space Gray) that says "Read Speeds up to 200 MB/s".

A: For this Sandisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2, the read speeds are indeed up to 2000 MB/s. Although that is a maximum speed for sequential data, the read speeds are always going to be much faster than a hard disk drive.

Q: 10. does it come with backup software?

A: Backup software not included.

It's small, easy to use and hold a lot of photos, perfect for both home and backing up photos on trips.

I used to edit my videos off a rugged Lacie external HD, didn't realize how much a difference it could make to edit off of a SSD. Everything runs so much faster now.

I bought this SSD to do a SuperDuper bootable backup of my entire 4TB disk, in my MBPro. It was much faster than expected and I expected a lot. The only issue that I encountered was that I had to re-format the SSD, before it could be used for a bootable backup. No big deal.

In fact, even though this was marketed by the manufacturer, as being for Mac, I unexpected this issue, because very few companies that market to Mac users really know what it takes to be FULLY Mac-compatible.

If you are looking for an SSD for routine backups, this SSD is Mac-ready. But it is definitely NOT 100% Mac-Compatible. If you intend to create a bootable backup, you'll have to reformat, using Disk Utility. That said, that only takes a few seconds. OTOH, I know some people who are afraid of most utility apps that they are not familiar with. In fact, most of those people miss the days of rotary dial phones. It's a great product... just be prepared to re-format if you are making a bootable backup or want the fastest, most Mac-compatible product.

The size is great. It's just slightly larger than the leather business card holder that I carry. In fact, although I'm a techie, every time I pick it up I can't help but think about that fact that I'm holding a 4TB drive. I remember back in the 80's, when it took two of us to lift an 850MB CDC HDD into a 19-inch rack. I realize that this little thing holds more than 4,000 times the data of that old heavy HDD. WOW!

Build quality seems to be very good. It appears to be metal, with a rubberized back and sides. In other words, it gives you something to grip and it won't be easily knocked off a table, if it is laying on the rubber side. The metal side is good for applying P-Touch labels.

There is no activity indicator light. This is yet another non-issue for me. I only mention it because I know some people like to see a light.

Highly recommended, despite the minor initial format issue.

I have a 2TB V1 for some time and bought this 2TB V2 as a second backup of photo and video off iPad Pro and MacBook. This is USB not Thunderbolt drive so don't expect and get disappointed with the speed as it won't give you the speed specified with Apple. However, I use it as backup and don't do any editing on them so it's no big deal to me. I read some YT reviews stating since the speed is limited on Apple, why spend extra money on the faster Pro V2, but my experience is V2 is noticeable faster than V1 on my MacBook, iPad Pro is less different. Therefore, there is speed advantage with Pro V2. The drive is small, the rubber ISS finishing is nice to touch, it does get warm to almost hot in sustained connection/usage. I don't like the security software of this drive so I didn't turn on encryption which means I don't want to lose it so I don't keep anything confidential or personal on it. I carry a spare empty V1 1TB drive when I travel so the potential loss is what I shoot in the trip and not my entire backup.

So far drive is amazing and works perfect - I am using it with Serrato and music and music videos - B&H staff was excellent - only one thing I would like to see , a cord that is a little longer, and I like would like it to be in some kind of rubber case around it , so it appears to be a little more impact resistant from just daily life - also would love to see one in 8TB - as of todays writing 100% happy

I have used the 1TB non-pro version, but I was excited to upgrade to the 4TB PRO version. I do a lot of 4K video editing and this is perfect for a field drive for that. I can edit without proxies and have enough space to keep several active project on there and more room to backup stuff after a full day of filming.

These work great - fast and very small with only bus power requirements. I do long trips for bird photography and can make redundant backups in the field with a few of these. I have 6 and never have had a problem with them. I can easily keep a set in my pack when the situation calls for it or when flying. Highly recommended.

I work in the Seafood Industry, and I used my 1TB Drive all the time over the past 3 years, the only problem I have had is with the cable, which was easily replaced. More recently I left my drive in the pocket of my jeans, and it went through the wash, after 45 minutes in the heavy wash cycle, I thought I had lost all my data, but after allowing it to dry for 24 hours it still works fine! I think I will have to get another one as a backup but will continue using it until it dies. Absolutely great product!
