Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Anyone actually getting 2000MB/s? I'm using this with a Thunderbolt 4 cable directly into my M1 max Thunderbolt port and I get 950MB/s...

A: Max speed is under optimal conditions. File format and size of files can have impact on the actual sustained transfer speeds.

Q: 2. What is this drive pre-formatted in?

A: The format is not specified. You would need to format it to the tile system type you need.

Q: 3. I have this 2tb Pro SSD with the (theoretical) 2GB/s speed. I've run TechTool's speed test on this drive when plugged into a brand new 14" MacBook Pro. As others have stated, I'm only seeing about 1GB/s (half speed). I've tried the included USB cable, as well as a Thunderbolt 4 cable. I guess there's no way to get full speed from this SSD on even the newest Macs. Any suggestions on how to do it?

A: The SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2, (B&H # SAE812TB), requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C connection which Apple computers do not support. It is not possible to reach these speeds with a Mac, at best it will reach 1GB/s which is what you are reaching now so the drive is working as it should. If you want to reach higher speeds with an external SSD, you would need to look into a Thunderbolt 3/4 SSD like the SanDisk Professional 2TB PRO-G40 SSD Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD, (B&H # SAS312TB).

Q: 4. The Mac Mini M1 has Thunderbolt3/USB4/USB3.1Gen2. What speed should I get with this Extreme Pro V2 drive USB 3.2 Gen 2x2?

A: Due to some compatibility issue with M1 Mac computers and USB 3.2 2x2 configuration, users have reported speeds of around 1,000 - 1250 MB/s when using the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 with these machines.

Q: 5. Can I connect this to my laptop Thunderbolt 3 port? Is so, which cable should I use, and what speed should I expect?

A: Yes, Thunderbolt3 is backwards compatible with USB-C speeds and will be able to connect in the TB3 port. You should get USB 3.2 transfer speeds.

Q: 6. What does the V2 mean in the description headline?

A: It means it is version 2. The updated model can read and write at up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds which is twice as much as V1 did.

Q: 7. does the 2000/ write speeds only apple with usd-c to usb-c connections? my laptop is older and dont have USB-c

A: Yes, the listed speeds on the SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 apply to optimal use case via USB-C. USB-A is a slower connection by nature.

Q: 8. If I pair this with a MacStudio for storing my RAW files for editing in Lightroom will I be happy with the speed?

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 has up to 2000MB/s speed.

Q: 9. anyone have any disk failure issues with this new batch of 4TB's?

A: When the SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 first came out there were some issues. But there have not been any customers with problems since.

Q: 10. What do I need to connect this to my thunderbolt port on a 2015 MBP?

A: You can not connect this via Thunderbolt as it is a USB device. Please use the included Type C to Type A adapter to connect to your 2015 MacBook Pro.

I have tried multiple ports to test write/ read speed, USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type -C port, USB Gen 2 port, and even a USB 2.0 port. No matter what port write/ read speeds are just under 1000 MB/s.

I would suggest buying the Sandisk Extreme instead of the Extreme pro, save the money. I also tested a Samsung SSD T5 for point of reference also a great reliable drive.

Current build components that would play a role in the speed:
1. AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Matisse 3.5GHz 16-Core AM4 Boxed Processor
2. MSI X570 MEG Unify AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard
3. Crucial Ballistix Gaming 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 Dual Channel Desktop Memory
4. Samsung 2TB 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD

This SSD definitely makes my life easier. It's super fast, ultra portable, and durable and is a marked upgraded over the V1. I don't only used these to back up content in the field but also to edit on, as I found that a fast drive really makes editing high res videos go smoothly. Highly recommended!

You can't beat this size and speed for this capacity. I would leave on a cool surface though, and try and give it air, it gets hot as heck when transfering TB size files.

The SanDisk 4TB Pro is fantastic. Easy to use, fast and is very small, so it travels well. An SSD gives you much more confidence there will be no failure, that you might risk with a mechanical memory device.

So far, this thing has been amazing. Using it with a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max and Adobe Premiere Pro - using 4K footage. I have the 1TB Extreme version from a couple years ago and it's always been very fast and solid, but the PRO V2 just takes it to another level. I'm not sure how the exact numbers hold up, as I don't test that, but I'm glad I got it.
