The mini part is long enough to have a good connection in the thunderbolt port. I am not sure if mini display and thunderbolt are the same plug, but some are short and don't work. This one does

I bought a Benq SW270C monitor for editing and thought I needed to buy this because the monitor didn't come with one, as many forums and reviewers have said. Surprise, the monitor came with one. *However* this one is far surperior to the one that came with the monitor. The locking mechanisms are superior on the ends and the connection is more reliable (there was occasionally glitching with the BENQ cable), and I don't have that problem at all with this cable. I've been really happy that I bought this one and kept it instead of trying to return it. It's well worth the money for the superior reliability.

B&H technical consultant was a big help. She determined that a new HP monitor could be connected to an older Mac Pro using DP, not hdmi, which I was thinking of using. 10 attagirls. Thank you.
