Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you recommend a sling strap for use with a heavy lens and this QD?

A: The Kirk QD Quick Disconnect Push Button Swivel-D could be used with a sling strap such as this Black Rapid: https://bhpho.to/2UHiwk4

Q: 2. Would this work on a platypod. I'm concerned that the tightening knob would not allow it to sit flat or be hard to turn?

A: Unfortunately, this would not work with the Platypod. In our testing the tightening knob does not allow the head to sit flat and cannot be tightened fully.

Q: 3. Is this QD compatible with mediaprogear's PBX3 L bracket?

A: The Kirk QD Quick Disconnect Push Button Swivel-D is compatible with the ProMediaGear PBX3 L-bracket with a QD port.

Q: 4. I want to attach a Peak Design anchor to the Kirk LP-70 I just ordered. Is the QD needed and or helpful?

A: Yes, you can connect the Peak Design AL-4 Anchor Links to the Kirk QD Quick Disconnect Push Button Swivel-D if you want to attached a shoulder strap to the Kirk QD button. Kirk QD button is a proprietary connector, which allow you to quickly connect or disconnect lens foot or other accesories may by Kirk.

Q: 5. Does this provide any positive buoyancy and, if so, how much?

A: The Ultralight TR-DH Handle for Underwater Camera Tray (Blue), BH #ULTRDH does not have any positive buoyancy.

Q: 6. Will the large QR clamp accept large and small plates? And vice versa?

A: Yes, as long as the plate is Arca-Swiss style most will work with the Kirk TQR-2L Tripod Head Quick Disconnect System with Large Plate.

Q: 7. What are the functional differences between this and the Kirk TQR-1S?

A: The Kirk TQR-3S Tripod Head Quick Disconnect Small System with TQR-MPS Plate is for smaller tripods. It includes an assembly that measures ø: 2.0 x W: 2.8. The Kirk TQR-1S is made for wider tripods. It includes an assembly that measures ø: 2.9 x W: 4.5. I recommend purchasing a system that is closer to the size of your tripod base.

Q: 8. Does this model actually feature a bubble level? I thought that was a feature of the TQR-1S, which costs more?

A: This model does not feature a bubble level.

Q: 9. After 10 months of use, the QD disconnect is no longer holding the Kirk footing for the Sony 600 mm f/4. It clicks in then pulls right out. Can I lubricate this item and restore it's normal function?

A: Unfortunately, because we are not privy to the engineering or technical specifications of the Kirk QD swivel, it might be best to contact Kirk directly to avoid using the wrong kind of lubrication in order to avoid damaging it and potentially your lens! The Kirk QD Swivel-D comes with a 5-year warranty for defects and issues, and should cover such malfunctions.

Q: 10. Is this only for CCH4? Or does it fit with CCH2?

A: It will work with the CCH2.

Exponentially increases the tripod/ head combinations. Excellent addition to tripod/head equipment, almost a must have.

Throw a dab of blue Loctite on the mounting screw and you'll have yourself a very secure QR platform to swap out heads. I use them on both my Gitzos, tripod and monopod. Very sturdy and well engineered platform that's typical of KES.

This is a very useful and well-thought out addition if you use a variety of heads on your tripod, e.g. ball head, geared head, gimbal head. Quicker than screwing and unscrewing heads and I suspect more secure because both the clamp and plate use anti-rotation set screws.

This kit can be used to mount one tripod head to one set of legs. Additional plates (which come in large or small sizes) are available for additional heads for reasonable cost.

I am aware that Arca-Swiss has their own quick link system for this purpose, but it costs more and is very difficult to find in the U.S.

Note that this system does add height (~1.5 inches) and weight (9.4 oz, including clamp, plate, and all of the bolts) to your setup, so this is not something Ill be using with my light and compact travel tripod. I am using it on my heavy-duty FLM Berlin 38.4 tripod, and the additional stack height and weight are hardly noticeable.

The TQR-2L Tripod Head quick release really works well and is a delight to use. I have a ball head and a gimbal head and now can switch easily in the field using one tripod.

I've used this attached directly to a 100mm half ball leveling base to reduce vibrations with very heavy medium format telephoto camera rigs.

At first, I thought a clamp atop the tripod was needless and would make negligible difference. I was wrong.

I'm not fortunate enough to have designated tripods. I have to regularly swap ball, pano, gimbal and fluid heads. I did myself a big favor by installing Kirk clamps to tripods and plates onto heads. Changing gear is now quick, effortless and the lockup very secure.

Secondary, tripods are easier to transport without a head.

What makes the Kirk clamp different is the silver spacer gives enough relief for the knob to operate freely regardless of the diameter of the tripod mount. I've tried other circular clamps where the knob binds when mounted to a dissimilar base.

It goes without saying, if you keep one head wedded to your tripod, then this system isn't necessary.
