Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What Frequency does these use?

A: The Midland MB400 uses the UHF frequency spectrum between 450MHz to 470MHz.

Q: 2. What else do I need to purchase to work with full face motorcycle helmets?

A: In addition to this system, Midland recommends the AVP-H2 Helmet kit.

Q: 3. Can you use a single ear w/ mic headset?

A: Yes. This walkie talkie is great.

Q: 4. I see that I would need an FCC license. How do I get this license. Can I buy and operate these with out a license? Thanks

A: As per the Midland GXT1000VP4 manual: "The radios operate on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) license. You must be licensed prior to operating the radio. Serious penalties could result from unlicensed use of GMRS channels, in violation of FCC rules, as stipulated in the Communications Acts Sections 501 and 502 (amended). You will be issued a call sign by the FCC which should be used for station identification when operating the radio on GMRS channels. You should also cooperate by engaging in permissible transmissions only, avoiding channel interference with other GMRS users, and being prudent with the length of your transmission time. To obtain a license or ask questions about the license application, contact the FCC at 1-888-CALL FCC or go to the FCC's website: http://www.fcc.gov and request form 605."

Q: 5. Is there a compatible headset (one ear covered by speaker) with VOX boom mike for the GTX1000VP4?

A: There are several different headsets that will work with this model. The AVP1, AVPH3, & AVPH4 are among the best ones.

Q: 6. The specs indicate GMRS channels are 1-7 and 15-22. What are the uses for channels 8-14 and are there any channels beyond 22?

A: Channels 8-14 on the Midland MicroMobile MXT275 15-Channel Two-Way GMRS Radio are only allowed up to 0.5 watts of power by the FCC. Since the MXT275 is not capable of transmitting at such a low power, these channels have been removed from the radio. The FRS/GMRS frequency range has a standard 22 channels.

Q: 7. Do you have to use the headset for the radios to work? Specifically, can you use just the handset?

A: No, the headsets are an extra asset, but not necessary to use the radio.

Q: 8. Can I just use regular AA batteries or do I have to have a Midland battery pack? Thanks!

A: Yes you can use AA.

Q: 9. How well do these penetrate through walls?

A: The Midland GXT1000VP4 2-Way Compact Communication Radios are best suited for outdoor use. I would recommend (for starters) a Kenwood # KEPKT23K which can operate in a steel and/or concrete reinforced building, with a working range of up to 225,000 sq.ft.

Q: 10. Does the MXT500 come with an antenna?

A: Yes, the Midland MXT500 MicroMobile 2-Way Radio comes with an antenna as well as a magnet mount/cable, microphone, and power cord.

Tried CB radios but never had clear transmission so we went with the micromobile 2-way radios and have had great reception so far.

I bought this Two-way to go in the combine on our farm. Installation was quick and easy, and I powered the unit with the DC power adapter plugged into the cigarette lighter. We have a couple of the handhelds that we use together with this unit and they work great. Range with those is up to 4 miles in our area. Rural but quite a few tress and houses in between.

One thing that we have trouble with is talking into the mic. Sometimes it is hard to understand the person that is talking on the Two-way. I think most of it is inexperience in how to hold the mic up to talk so I am hoping this gets better the more we use it.

Another thing I wish was available was a connector with flying leads to wire into the power point that the combine has. I know most people probably cut the 12V adapter off and wire it directly into the power point, but this limits the places you can put it in the cab. I am sure a quick google search and I could find the connector, but if Midland offered this as an option when purchasing, I am sure many people would get it.
