The A300 cabinet is built with 25mm thick rigid MDF with cherry wood veneer finished in a satin lacquer. Internal bracing supports and stabilizes the drivers and helps minimize cabinet resonance. To further reduce sound coloration, the cabinet interior is fully lined with 36mm thick waved sound absorption material. The oval shaped vent tube in the A300 is carefully designed to minimize wind noise. The internal wiring is made by TRANSPARENT for enhanced accuracy and minimal signal loss.
The horn-loaded ribbon tweeter of the A300 inherits the mechanism of the tweeter in the Airpulse 7001 near-field monitor speaker. The ribbon diaphragm is designed for high sensitivity, superb transient response, extended frequency range, and well-defined resolution.
The mid-woofer is a 6.5" driver with an anodized aluminum alloy cone suspended in a heavy-duty, rigid cast magnesium alloy frame. The Proprietary Aluminum Alloy Cone (PAAC) of the mid-woofer was designed from analysis of all types of cone geometry and materials using a Klippel Laser Doppler Interferometer. It features a large underhung motor structure with a high-gauss neodymium magnet and a 50mm diameter edge-wound, copper-clad aluminum ribbon voice coil to gain maximum linear excursion and control that also reduces the weight of the driver, allowing the speaker to have a fast transient response as well as total loss-modulation distortion.
Larger voice coils have less power compression because they run at a cooler operating temperature. Sonically, this means a more realistic dynamic representation of the music. The cooler running temperature of the voice coil also has the added benefit of a more reliable loudspeaker, since a cooler voice coil means less chance of speaker failure.
For uncompromised performance, the A300 mid-woofer uses a rigid cast-magnesium alloy frame. Its rigidity reduces speaker coloration, and its material helps to dissipate heat efficiently from the voice coil much faster than a typical steel speaker frame, which all leads to increased dynamics and power handling, and ultimately, a satisfying musical experience.
The entire digital system is built on a multi-core signal processor – the XMOS XU216, a 16-core powerful audio processor based on XMOS xCore200 architecture, which boasts to have up to 2000 MIPS processing horse power. With its unique parallel structure, it is well equipped for timing-sensitive signal process like audio, especially audio with high sample rate. The dual clock structure at the output stage effectively avoids signal modification between different sample rates and can further reduce signal distortion.
The amplifier section of the A300 is composed of three TAS5754 Class D amplifiers from Texas Instruments. This component combines a high input sample rate support and a high output PWM carrier frequency to help achieve low background noise and distortion. The up-to 192 kHz input sample rate support guarantees the entire link of digital processing run without any change of sample rate of the signal. Its 768 kHz output PWM carrier frequency – twice the 384 kHz of other Class-D amplifiers – is even more suitable to drive the high-sensitivity ribbon tweeter. Each channel's mid-woofer is driven by one TAS5754 connected in parallel bridge mode. The third TAS5754 is connected in bridge mode for the left and right channel ribbon tweeters.
The analog front end uses Texas Instruments components. With their configuration, the chipsets work at 96 kHz, offering a frequency response up to 40 kHz. The wide-range input frequency response helps guarantee thorough signal acquisition at very low distortion. To avoid cross-talk between the two analog ports, the A300 uses a relay instead of a semiconductor switch.
The SPDIF receiver is the Texas Instruments PCM9211, which supports up to 216 kHz input sample rates. With a very low output jitter, the unpacked audio signal can be delivered to the XMOS processor with virtually zero loss.
The USB audio interface supports the UAC2 audio application and an input sample rate of up to 192 kHz. This audio application effectively avoids signal degradation and dynamic range loss due to the computer's onboard DAC and provides a new method for high-definition audio playback. The Bluetooth audio receiver is built on Qualcomm's Bluetooth 5.0 chipset, which supports aptX decoding and offers enhanced audio playback quality over SBC Bluetooth.
The A300 comes with a wireless remote control used for taking control of your sound. You can switch between inputs easily from the comfort of your seat.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. How do this compare to 2 JBL xtreme paired together?
A: The Audioengine HD6 pair will blow away the JBL pair! The JBL Extreme's particular charms are that it is a portable bluetooth system, splash-proof, rugged and battery operated. Oh, and a pair of them would sound great but I recommend them on their own merits and not as a competitor for your affections withe the HD6.
Q: 2. working with limited space, 8" shelf but has 12" depth & 4ft width. can these speakers be placed on their side and still work good? also does it come with anything to decouple the speakers from a tv stand/shelf?
A: It is not recommended but sure you can do that and they will still work good. The A5+ does not come with any attachments for a stand, they are made to sit on any flat surface.
Q: 3. Are these 16bit or 24bit DAC? I can't seem to find in the specs...
A: There is a 16bit DAC inside.
Q: 4. DO I NEED A BLUETOOTH ADAPTER IF i HAVE USB ON MY LAPTOP?
A: No adapter needed. In addition to the speaker's built in Bluetooth receiver, the Audioengine A2+ can be connected to a computer's USB A port with the supplied 4.9' asynchronous USB cable or to the computer's headphone jack with the supplied 4.9' mini-jack audio cable.
Q: 5. is there a material i could use to increase separation between the speakers and my tempered glass tv stand? trying to minimize vibrations. using the audio engine ds1 speaker stands ( B&H#AUADS1 ) and they work well. just looking to add an additional thin pad underneath to absorb a little more vibration
A: I recommend considering the Audioengine DS1 stands BH #AUADS1
Q: 6. How long is the speaker connecting cable on this unit? And is it a "proprietary" cable, or what type exactly?? Thanks!
A: The speaker connecting cable for the Airpulse A100 Bluetooth Speaker System is 3m long. This cable is supplied by one of Airpulse's partner companies.
Q: 7. Can these be used as computer speakers? I like a lot of bass, and currently using klipsch pro media 2.1 speakers.
A: I believe A5+ can be computer speakers because they are active speakers comes with amplifier embedded. However, they are too big if you put them next to my 27 monitor. Imagine it will looked so out of proportion with smaller monitor. I suggest you use A2+ and add a subwoofer to give better bass than A5+ can provide. A2+ will be less costly. Money saved can pay a portion of a sub. I currently use A5+ on speaker stands with a 4K TV, which put out terrible sound quality. I am an audiophile and I cannot recommend A5+ or A2+ as hifi speakers for music listening. They are just OK speakers and cost effective.
Q: 8. Do they support Bluetooth?
A: The Audioengine A5+ does not support bluetooth. If you want to use them with bluetooth connectivity, then you will need a bluetooth receiver to connect to them like B&H # AUB1
Q: 9. Can the be played with 240V power supply?
A: Yes, these speakers are dual voltage. 115/240VAC, 50/60Hz selectable.
Q: 10. What is the difference between the A2+ model vs the A1 model?
A: The Audioengine A2+ Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System with S6 6" 210W Subwoofer Kit (Satin Black), BH # AUA2PBTBLKS6 (B&H Kit), offers the following differences over the A1speakers according to Audioengine: The A1 and A2+ are both premium powered stereo speakers, with high-quality aptX Bluetooth for quick and easy connection to any app or device. Modeled after the A2+, the A1 also boasts precision tuned, hand-crafted cabinets, uses the same silk dome tweeters and aramid fiber woofers, and features an aux audio input and subwoofer connection. Where the A1s differ, however, are in the types and styles of connections and the finish style of the cabinets. The A1 speakers use spring clips for the speaker wire connections rather than 5-way binding posts and, unlike the A2+, do not offer RCA or USB connection options. The A1 hand-finished cabinets feature vinyl exterior finish rather than the painted finish offered on the A2+.
