Spanning a versatile zoom range and characterized by its bright design, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a 25.5-105mm-equivalent lens for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The wide to short-tele range is ideal for everyday shooting and the fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Complementing this design is a series of specialized optics, including aspherical and low dispersion elements, that produce well-corrected imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Adding to the versatility of the zoom design is a Vibration Compensation image stabilization system, which reduces the appearance of camera shake for steadier photo and video recording in low-light conditions. Also benefitting handling, an RXD stepping motor enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile zoom is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and covers wide-angle to short-telephoto fields of view with its 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.

Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to correct distortion and spherical aberrations to achieve a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.

Two LD (Low Dispersion) elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.

BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5" and a 1:4.8 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the zoom function works for this lens with Sony FX30 zoom rocker button?

A: Unfortunately no. The Tamron 17-70mm lens is not a power zoom lens and therefore not supported by the zoom rocker on the FX30.

Q: 2. I'm looking for a longer hood for the 17-70 lens. Is there a hood from one of the other Tamron lenses that might fit?

A: The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E comes with the dedicated tulip-shaped HA036 Lens Hood. If you use a different or longer lens hood, you will need to attach it in front of the lens instead of the lens bayonet. Also, a longer lens hood will create vignetting at the lens' wide angle range. Non-dedicated lens hoods connect to the lens' 67mm front threads.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with the Fuji X-T1? I've seen conflicting reports saying only X-T2 or later.

A: The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for FUJIFILM is compatible with the FUJIFILM X-T1 Mirrorless Digital Camera.

Q: 4. Is it 17-70 on APS-C and 25.5-105 on full frame (in crop mode)? I don’t understand equivalence when it comes to APSC lens vs full frame ones and the same for bodies.

A: The physical specifications of the lens are 17-70mm in focal length, however, the angle of view would be equivalent to that of a 25.5-105mm on both APS-C cameras and full-frame cameras in crop-mode. If used on a full-frame camera without crop mode, the lens will vignette.

Q: 5. Does the lens block any light from the built in flash? Looks kinda big and might.

A: It will not block light from a built-in flash.

Q: 6. Is this internal zoom or if used on a gimbal will the gimbal need rebalancing when focal length is changed?

A: Even with internal-zoom lenses, the center of mass/gravity might change because the internal elements might have shifted forward or back. Always power down your gimbal before zooming to check.

Q: 7. Is it made in China?

A: This item's country of origin is Vietnam.

Q: 8. Does this lens have any USB inputs? How do you do a firmware update on this lens?

A: The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E does not have any current firmware updates. If Tamron releases a firmware update for this lens, you can perform the firmware update through the camera body. The link below from Tamron USA explains step by step the entire process: https://bhpho.to/3LJQNtb

Q: 9. Will this lens work on fs5? Is it parfocal?

A: This is an APS-C format E-mount lens meant for Sony cameras, and should mount without issue on an FS5. Based on the FS5 sensor size (23.6 x 13.3mm), it should also more than adequately cover the Super35 sensor. Unfortunately, it is not parfocal.

Q: 10. will this lens perform auto focus continuously for doing video with sony zv-E10 camera ?

A: Yes, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E maintains tracking focus and subject detection while shooting video mode in the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera.

This is the bread and butter focal length for APS-C. And getting a constant f2.8 is really useful. With APS-C sensors you want to keep the ISO low, so speed helps. Furthermore it's harder to get subject isolation with APS-C so speed is key.

Focus works as well as any native lens (which is excellent).

The lens is sharp throughout, produces good colour and contrast. It close focuses and has OSS - great for a6000, a6100, a6300 and a6400 cameras without sensor shift.

It's bigger than its peers is the only negative thing I can say - but this is to be expected as it's either substantially faster (than the 16-70, 18-135) or has OSS (vs. 16-55).

I found the image quality to be better than the the Sony 16-70 (though I still like that lens) and quite a bit better than the Sony 18-135. It's a tad behind Sony's most excellent 16-55 (which is a true stunner at every f-stop and focal length). Put another way the Tamron is close to the Sigma trio (giving up f1.4 for zoom convenience and OSS). It's a good compromise at a good price. Highly recommended.

Now get out there and shoot!

I bought the 17-70 a few weeks ago and I am really in love with this lens, the focal range is super dynamic and works for many scenarios.

The only defect is that after 50 mm it loses a bit of sharp is very discreet, but if you are very fussy, I recommend checking some reviews.

For my and my kind of work, it's perfect

Before anything I've been in photography since Film era still, I don't consider myself a pro. Now back to the review, as mi title says, Tamron is always a good balance between cost lens and picture quality.
I got this lens little less than a year. This lens does its job, Quick response in different light conditions, sharp focus and good colors overall.
I'm very Happy with my purchase. Now I'm getting the 11- 20 because I need the extra wide angle.

The range on this lens makes it a great choice for a do-it-all lens that gets wide enough, while also breaking into the near telephoto range at 70mm on APSC. Handling wise, it is bigger than comparable options, but the constant 2.8 aperture and the aforementioned range mean that if those two features speak to you, it is well worth carrying around. Also, it is not as heavy as the size might dictate, and it balances well on a body like the a6X00 line.
Overall, I strongly recommend the lens! I was lucky enough to get to try it out at the NYC store pre-purchase which also really helped!

This lens exceeded my expectations. It's a very useful focal range for APS-C, and at f/2.8 it's great for most lighting situations. Focus is quick and accurate, including in video. It rarely leaves my a6600.

I bought this after using a similar Tamron on my sister's full frame. I am not a pro by any means, but I really enjoy the quality of this lens. It's perfect for traveling and the images come out beautiful!

I am no longer thinking about stepping up to full frame. This lens may never leave my a6400. Best glass possible for APS-C camera. Thank you Tamron!

The 17-70 exceeded my expectations.
I am using it on a Sony FX30. Sony's legendary autofocus works perfectly and silently. The FX30 has digital Clear Zoom which leverages it's 6K sensor, and that adds reach to the long end exceeding anything I need on an everyday basis.
The lens is big-ish, but not heavy. It feels very solid and well crafted. The zoom action feels smooth and consistent.
I look forward to pairing this with the Tamron 11-20 f2.8.

I have had the tamron 17 70 2.8 since January 13. I was using the sony 18-135 3.5 5.6. Which is a good lens too. But the Tamron is a Huge step up! Crystal clear optics. I still have the 18-135 just in case I need the extra reach, but have not come close to needing it! If your on the fence about this JUST GO FOR IT!!!!

This lens is awesome. For many shooters and videographers this could be a one and done lens. There are some things to be aware of. First of all it is a big lens. I would recommend getting a small cage or L-bracket like the UURig R006 to have a better grip on the small bodies of the A6XXX series when using this lens. I would not consider this a travel lens because of it's size, but your mileage may vary. I would choose the excellent Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens over this for a travel. Also there is no switch to turn off Tamron's version of OSS, so you need to do it in camera when taking long exposures on a tripod. If you don't they will come out blurry with this lens. Also for me, this is not a substitute for the Sigma trio of F1.4 lenses, with the exception of the 16mm which is my least favorite of the three. The Sigma 56mm in particular has that magical look to it and is sharp wide open. Bokeh on the Tamron 17-70mm is good not great, but certainly an improvement over the popular full frame Tamron 28-75mm. Sharpness is excellent across the board, but as many reviews have said you need to stop it down to F4 at the long end if you're pixel peeping or making large print. For social media posting or small prints you won't notice it shooting wide open on the long end of the zoom range. If you want a fast all purpose lens for your Sony A6XXX camera and don't mind the size, this is the one you've been waiting for.
