I have an 85 1.2L, 50 1.2L, and now a 16-35 II 2.8L -- thisis probably the best wide lens I've used. I was debatingbetween the 35L and the 16-35 II 2.8L. I know I made theright choice. I just purchased this lens for my 40D. I wanted to compare this to another lenses I have at similar focal length. I did not compare at wide open aperture because I rarely shoot wide open with wide angle lenses. I must say I was stunned by the result. This lense will be ha close competior to my 24 -70. This is an incredible lens, and will be the lens to go to bring every time I'm out taking some photos. It is highly recommended, and the results so far is stunning.

Definitely an improvement from thr first gen 16-35. Increased sharpness and a little less barrel distortion, probably due to the bigger front element.Definitely needed the upgrade for a 1Ds Mk III.

I have this lens for 2 weeks,I am very satisfied with this amazing one Feels good,nice and well constructed.AF is extremely quiet,very fast,and accurate Image quality can be considered like primes.Sharp around 4 corners,clarity,contrast,no flare,no ghost For few hundred extras (compared to the older lens) ,I think it is really worth I own some Nikons,too But this wide angle lens is always surprising me. This is my first L-Series as well as my first wide angle. I purchased it for my 5D for weddings and portraits. It's going to be great for weddings as it can zoom out from pretty much normal to wildly wide. The only problems I've had with it are my own as I still have a lot to learn about this lens.

I bought the lens from BH. Everything about it is perfect: the weight, feeling, sharpness, contrast, colors, AF. This can be my new favourite lens. This lens is very sharp even wide open through the entire zoom range. I bought it mainly to shoot wide open at events. As a minor downside, the filter size is 82mm, and now all my filters which were on 77mm, are not usable.

Sharp right to the edges. Way better than the previous model! Only down side is it is 82mm, where as most of the Canon 'L' series lenses are 72mm.

I really recommend to buy the basic Canon L trio lenses, one is 24-70 L lens for standard angle, another is 16-35 L lens for wide angle, the other is 70-200 L lens for zoom telephoto. Now, I got two of them and I was truly satisfied with this fantastic lens with my 5D. If you compare this lens to 24-70 L lens it is not heavey at all which means you can bring it to anywhere. It might be to open your new point of view so you can see a very interesting angle on a subject. For example, if you take a picture for your friends or pet as a very close-shot it is going to be looked like a very funny caricature. Also, this lens especially a good for landscape shot. Such being the case, these days most of took a pictures I always used 16-35 L lens with my 5D as a bady cap.
