The NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) from Nikon is an ultra-compact and lightweight FX-format prime lens with a traditional Nikon heritage design. This Special Edition lens inherits its design from the classic NIKKOR lenses released around the same time as the Nikon FM2 film SLR camera, with features that faithfully reproduce the designs of that time, such as knurling, and a prominent control ring. The lens is designed to be a versatile wide-angle lens well-suited to a range of subjects, including landscape, architecture, and reportage. With an f/2.8 max aperture, this fast, bright lens offers beautiful details at a standard focal length. Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. It makes for a great carry-around lens for spontaneous moments at any time of day.

Two fast stepping autofocus motors operate in near silence. the internal focus lens features a rear-focus design that divides the elements into specific lens groups, with only the rear lens group moving for focusing for faster, smoother operation. The position of the focus groups is precisely controlled, resulting in extremely accurate and high-speed AF control

Enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation

The position of the focus groups is precisely controlled, resulting in extremely accurate and high-speed AF control. Also, by effectively reducing aberrations, superb imaging performance is delivered across the entire shooting range including close distances.

Multilayer lens coating achieves high transmittance in a wider wavelength range. This coating system effectively reduces the ghost and flare effects that are likely to occur in backlit situations, helping you achieve high-contrast images with rich gradation. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. See previous questions. Two different answers from "Staff" on FX or DX lens: on FX camera it stays FX sensor or crops to DX size? The lens description is "FX"

A: This is indeed an FX lens.

Q: 2. WILL THE NIKON SAVINGS APPLY STILL THOU THE LENS IS OUT OF STOCK?

A: As long as you placed the order for the lens before the instant savings expires, you would still receive the savings even if the lens ships after the offer is over.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with the D700?

A: it only works on manual focus. the auto focus won't work. i don't know why . it may be something i am doing on my camera. i don't like it for that reason. i wanted a 1.4 aperture lens but i could not afford it. maybe yours will work on auto but mine won't.

Q: 4. Is the lens weather sealed?

A: The Nikon 28mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Z Lens (SE) has Dust- and Moisture- Sealed Construction.

Q: 5. This len works in a Nikon D7000?Thanks,

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D7000 as well as all Nikon DSLR bodies.

Q: 6. on a z6 would this lens go into the crop mode or stay full frame? it's confusing.

A: The, Nikon 28mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Z Lens (SE) is a full frame lens. So, on a full frame Z mount camera it will be 28mm.

Q: 7. This lens is recommended a full frame camera. However, I have a Nikon D7100. Can you recommend a similar lens (f1.8, 28mm prime) that would be more suitable for my camera?

A: FX lenses such as this are fully compatible and intended by Nikon for you to use on your DX bodies such as the D7100. Nikon does not make a DX version of this lens for me to offer you an alternative in this case.

Q: 8. is this a dx or fx lens? it states on your website that it is fx format.

A: This is a full frame format Z mount lens which can be used on both DX or FX Z mount bodies.

Q: 9. I like to know it will go on d3200

A: As the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens has the built-in AF-S Silent Wave Motor inside the lens, it is fully compatible and will autofocus on all Nikon DSLR cameras, including the Nikon D3200 DSLR camera.

Q: 10. I am a bit confused, it states that it is a DX format lens, but states it is compatible with the Z6/Z7 cameras. Will it function in FX mode on a Z6/Z7 camera? If so, I could see this lens being a nice compact video lens with a gimbal.

A: When using this lens on an FX camera, the FX camera would go into DX mode, and you'd be using the center most portion of the sensor as opposed to the full size of an FX sensor.

I find myself using this lens more often than my larger S lenses because it is so light, compact and versatile as a daytime walkaround lens. It has mostly lived on my Z6ii since I bought it. I love the images so far; seems to produce very nice colors and micro-contrast. It's a great looking lens too, and the focus ring turns buttery smooth. I added a Vello 52mm hood to protect the front element and the lens-cap clips right into it.

Wanted a small, light walk around lens for my X and this 28mm ƒ2.8 fits the bill. It works well with the sensor to deliver great photos at all ranges and f stops. The only problem with this lens is that I don't have any excuses for a bad photo.

After only using S-Line lenses on my Z7 I was not sure how I would feel about this lens. I was delighted from the minute I unboxed it. The lens feels solidly built and mounts snugly, plus the control ring is smooth and well tensioned. The lens focuses quickly and accurately like all Z lens, and best of all the image quality is even better than expected.

It is a pleasure shooting with this light and responsive lens. I have no reservations using it for any recreational purpose. With a Z7 there is enough contrast and resolution to produce a nice image at any aperture. I have not been able to produce a sharp sun star though, even when stopped all the way down (non-issue for me). This is another great Z lens, especially for the price!

Great lightweight lens. I love the retro look when it's on my black Nikon Z fc. Just the right focal length for landscape and street photography. Provides crisp images when shooting at one to two stops below maximum aperture.

Just needed a simple prime lens with a good aperture and the old school feel to it was perfect. Reminded me of using my Dad's old 35mm Nikon.

First, I must admit that I have had the Z 28mm f/2.8 for a while.  But, not the SE version.  Since I now own both the Zf and Zfc, I just had to get the SE because I knew it would look great on those cameras.  And … it really, really does look fantastic on them.  Of course, on the Zfc you are shooting at 42mm, which IMO is also a nice focal length.  I considered the Z 35mm f/1.8 S but the price and size were not appealing to me.  Don’t get me wrong, the S lenses are incredibly sharp.  I own a few of those as well, but for the price the 28mm SE is a real bargain.  The plastic mount does not bother me at all. The weight on both cameras is almost non-existent and, did I mention, it
looks totally awesome on those bodies.  To sum it up:  Cool factor, very high.  Build quality, pretty darn good even with the plastic mount.  Photo quality, I like the feel of the photos, but not nearly as sharp as the S lenses.  Price, yeah baby, well worth it.  I’ll use it for street photography, shooting the grandkids, and just for fun snapshots. I like the look and weight so much that I may consider selling my Z 40mm f/2 and replace it with the SE version. Attached are a few shots I took with the 28 on my Zf the day I received it from B&H.  Happy shooting!

I recently purchased a Nikon Zf so I needed a compact lens for street photography. So far I am very impressed with the sharpness and bokeh for a low cost lens. I will need more time in order to properly judge this lens but so far so good. I also purchased the 40mm f/2 (SE) lens that that one is exceptional!
