Multipass from Kilohearts is host software for the company's Snapin series of plug-ins that makes it easy to create and manipulate complex chains of effects and allows you to do frequency-dependent processing on up to 5 separate frequency bands. Snapin plug-ins are available separately for purchase, and some are included with the Multipass host software.

Multipass is compatible with most DAW software operating on the AU, AAX, and VST2 platforms and has been engineered to provide low-latency performance with minimal phase shifting, for terrific-sounding results. In addition to intuitive frequency-band processing, the software opens up a wide range of modulation possibilities with routing to almost every parameter in a Snapin plug-in. Macros can be created for external automation within your DAW.

The software provides a wide range of presets, all of which are fully functional. You must own (have a license for) the effect plug-in to alter the parameters for that effect. The system allows you to easily share presets with friends and collaborators, so you can collaborate easily. If you're ready to explore exciting modular effect possibilities, Multipass might be the perfect fit for your digital workflow.

When adding effects to a sound, it's not uncommon to want to apply these effects to just a certain part of the sound. For example, you might not want a complex chorus to affect your bass too much, or a hard distortion to totally fry your high end. Either way, multiband processing adds a dimension to effect chains that really opens up a new world of options in sound design. Multipass helps you with this, allowing you to split the input sound into up to 5 easily tweakable frequency bands and applying unlimited number of effects to each band. Pitch-shifted auto-pan with a filtered chorus-delay distortion—coming right up.

Band splitting comes with a bit of a price. It's unavoidable (without adding latency) to mess a bit with the phase of the sound. Usually this is not a problem, but when chaining multiple multiband effects this can add up to a lot of phase distortion. In Multipass, the band splitting is only done once no matter how many effects you add, leaving the phase as minimally harmed as possible. It also sorts out dry/wet mixing of effect lanes properly without phasing where possible. Parallel multiband compression, here we come.

While adding four filters, a frequency shifter, and a stereo-width modifier can be interesting in itself. Adding four filters with sweeping cutoffs retriggered by an audio threshold, a frequency shifter bound to the MIDI note, and stereo width scaled by the input RMS can be—well, probably strange. But it may be amazing, and trying it out is just a couple of clicks away. Try it.

When you're tweaking a specific frequency band, the other bands and effects involved can sometimes make it hard to properly hear what's going on. Mute or solo effect lanes to quickly home in on what you're doing. And if you automate it, it can even be an effect in itself.

Don't worry about latency. No matter how you route things or what effects you add, Multipass makes sure everything is in sync, so all modulation aligns properly and avoids phasing issues.

Snapins are regular VST/AU plug-ins that you can use for a multitude of purposes. They come in a bunch of different flavors, and Kilohearts is creating more all the time. The unique thing about the Snapin series is that they also work as modular effect pieces that you can combine in our Snapin host plug-ins—nifty. To give you some feel for what you can do with Snapins, 3-Band EQ, Delay, Chorus, Gain, Limiter, and Stereo Width are all included.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this box be mounted to the RAB-1 rear accessory bracket?

A: Although this is specifically designed to mount via 15mm rods, you should be able to mount via threaded ports as well.

Q: 2. Does this capture stereo audio?

A: The NZXT Signal HD60 External Capture Card will capture whatever type of audio you are outputting into it.

Q: 3. My JK Audio will no longer let me connect my callers to my Arrakis Broadcast system. How do I get my JK Audio to function properly again?

A: If the unit was working and then suddenly stopped, first please make sure all cables connecting the two units are functioning. If there were any changes made to the signal chain prior to the issue, please try to reset the original signal chain. If audio from the system can be heard by the caller, but the caller can not be run through the system, please ensure the callers channel is selected to take audio in on the system. If all the above is correct, then we'd suggest reaching out to JK Audio for deeper troubleshooting at 800-552-8346.

Q: 4. Under outputs it says:XLR Direct Output x8 XLR Transformerless Output x8What's the difference between direct and transformerless?

A: Hi Daniel, one of the outputs on each channel is directly connected to the input, and will give out exactly what is sent in. As far as I know, this it the channel that has no transformer, and will therefor also feed phantom power out. The other channel has an equally winded transformer that does nothing to the physical sygnal, but it gives out a clean sygnal that is isolated and will not allow for a ground loop potential differance to pass through to the source. It does not make sense to me to seperate the direct out, and transformerless out description, as they are the same. I would call it a Direct/Transformerless out, and one isolated trasformer out. But again, this is what I think, and I might be wrong. Hope this helps.

Q: 5. Our school recently started debate class. We are interested in this product. However, what other products go with this to be successful? We want to put this on a podium. What else do I need?Richard Victor Lake Nona High School

A: This unit is designed to be used with the Limitimer Pro-2000 System. Note: One PSL-20V is included in the Limitimer System PRO-2000 or PRO-2000BT Please see the detailed instructions for connection and use:http://bit.ly/1dJNHCG

Q: 6. How many phone calls can I take with this system? Nathan

A: Physically there is one silver satin or phone line connection. To reach multiple lines we use AT&T audio conference service.

Q: 7. Will this card run with this SSDs Western Digital WD Green, 2TB, SATA III?

A: Yes, you can connect SATA HDD and SSD's to the HighPoint RocketRAID 2840C PCIe Host Bus Adapter.

Q: 8. Does this system handle delays in case I have to censor a caller before it gets on the air?

A: The JK Audio Broadcast Host Desktop Digital Hybrid would not provide a delay for censoring calls. A unit such as the Eventide BD-960 Broadcast Audio Delay, B&H # EVBD960, would be recommended for censoring live broadcasts.

Q: 9. Can this power splitting box be used with the Canon C500mk2 by changing the connector to fit the Canon DC IN 12V terminal ?

A: We can only say that the ARRI Gold Mount Power Splitting Box Mk II would work with ARRI ALEXA Mini/Mini LF Cameras.

Q: 10. I was able recently to compare the sound of my Broadcast Host with a 20+ year-old Telos One hybrid and was astounded by how much less noise the ancient Telos had compared to my JK Audio unit. Am I doing something wrong with my BH? Are there settings I don't know about that adjust the noise suppression or whatever? This unit is more advanced so I'm sure it's operator error.

A: Telos is a professional broadcast supplier of telephone hybrids. The Telos One units were broadcast, very high quality devices, they adjusted the quality of analog audio, based on the POTS ("Plain Old Telephone Service") telephone line being used for that exact call. Currently, the telephone lines are often digital lines or sometimes a combination of analog and digital and often are carried over internet service providers. Using Audio Over Internet Provider (AOIP). There are several companies/ products which address these phone line differences. These include the JK Innkeeper, Comrex and Telos products (the latter 2 being Broadcast level).
