$329.97 $458.66

The 1.5 to 9-stop, 72mm Hoya Variable Density II ND Filter minimizes the vignette effect often experienced when shooting with wide-angle lenses. In this updated version, Hoya improved the frame of the predecessor Variable Density filter, making it thinner for better handling of vignetting. The filter features a dedicated knob for precision rotation between an adjustable neutral density range of 1.5 to 9-stops). It also allows you to attach an optional lens cap. It supports lens caps that are one size larger than the filter size.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. are these limited by focal length? if so what is the ideal or limit range in mm ?

A: Hoya 72mm HMC Close-Up Filter Set II (+1, +2, and +4) will work with lenses that have a 72mm filter thread. It's not limited to focal length. Each filter size will work on lenses with the corresponding filter thread.

Q: 2. Can any step-up rings be used with theses filters?

A: Yes, the PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5 Stop) can be connected to any aluminum step up ring.

Q: 3. Does this filter stop at each end of the adjustment or does it rotate past the end of each adjustment?

A: There are stops at each end on the B+W True-Match Vari-ND MK II Variable ND Filter.

Q: 4. How does it compare to B+W Vario ND 1-5? What is the front size? B+W's front size is designed at 86mm for less vignette. Even so, I did find vigenette at 24mm on my 24-105 lens. How about the color shifting? B+W is shifting green on 1-3 stops.

A: The front filter thread of this filter is 82mm. Most filters will begin to vignette to some degree at 24mm. Color shift is nearly always present when using variable ND filters, but how much varies between filters.

Q: 5. How is the weight of these close up filters? I want to use them (one at a time) on my Sony RX10 IV and am wondering if their weight is too great and would mess the lens at 600mm.

A: The following Hoya 40.5 filter will not work with Sony drop in filter system. The Hoya filters are to thick to fit in Sony drop in filter system.

Q: 6. Is the knob detachable?

A: Yes the knobs on the Hoya Variable Density II Filter are removable.

Q: 7. Do the marks correspond to fixed stop values to allow calculating exposure settings?

A: The "Marks" correspond to approx 1/2 stops.

Q: 8. Does this filter show IR pollution color shift on BMPCC4K?

A: We have not been able to test this filter. But it is a high quality filter that should not shift in color.

Q: 9. The overview for this Variable ND filter states that the effect is achieved by "...stacking highly neutral gray polarizing filters..." If so, will this filter also work as a good polarizing filter? I need a polarizer + ND filter for waterfall photography, so I was wondering whether a separate polarizing filter is needed in combination with this filter.

A: The Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable Neutral Density Filter (82mm) does not act as a Polarizing Filter. A separate Polarizing Filter is necessary to get the Polarizing effect.

Q: 10. What's the front filter thread size of this filter?

A: The front filter thread is 67mm
