A: Sure you can, as long as the wood cabinet is securely fastened to the wall. I actually bolt a piece of 1' thick plywood to the wall, and then I mount the racks to the plywood.

Q: 2. Are the surfaces painted on which will usually flake or are they more durable?

A: I purchased mine back on July 30, 2014. It is a black plastic - I don't think it is painted . Anyways I have had no issues with flaking. It has been stored in the trunk of my car (which we see extreme weather conditions here in New England) and mine has held up perfectly. It is a good product, I am very happy with my purchase. A: This unit is made of metal, so you would have to have the appropriate tool to cut a hole in the wall plate on the back to run cables through.
