Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the 70th anniversary edition functionally different than the standard (less expensive) model?

A: The Sekonic L-398A Studio Deluxe 70th Anniversary Edition Light Meter comes in burgundy color with rose gold accents, a special display box, "70th Anniversary" on the meter's front panel, a special leather case and strap. Functionality is exactly the same.

Q: 2. What’s the difference between this and the L-308B?

A: The L-308B is an older model that reads in shutter-priority only. The newer L-308X-U is the newest model, aimed at both photographers and videographers. Some of its new features include reading in both shutter- and aperture-priority, it now has a backlit LCD screen, a Cine-mode that allows you to pick shutter-speed or shutter-angle, and a few other features that make it a great update over some of Sekonic's older light meters.

Q: 3. Is the case for the regular L398A real leather?

A: The case included with Sekonic L-398A Studio Deluxe III Light Meter is made of synthetic leather.

Q: 4. As mentioned, this unit uses a magnet. Is it dangerous for someone that has a pacemaker or a shunt. Both use magnets. Also, what effect does this unit have on SD cards? If it can have an effect, what is a safe distance? Is twelve ( 12) inches too close?SEKONIC rep- THIS question is for you. I need a specific response please. I will not purchase without direct answersThanks.

A: I went right to Sekonic in Japan for this one as the manual has not be updated to include media cards. This is their official reply, which is likely to appear in the manual in some for or another. The power of L-398A magnet at strongest point is 0.06T (tesla) which is equal to 600G (guass). Please kindly check with the SD card manufacturer if their products can endure this magnet power. It is difficult for Sekonic to tell OK or NO against various kinds of products/materials.We can only tell Do not place L-398A close to the materials which may be damaged by magnet.Translated: It is not a good idea to place a media card near the meter. My guess would be that if you had an average camera bag, you could probably put all of your media cards in the right side pocket with the meter on the far left of the bag or in left side pocket and be safe. The card maker is the final word on this. Hope that helps.

Q: 5. Would this be a good light meter to use for studio still life/portrait work? I use film cameras for this work.

A: As long as you are measuring available light, (not flash) this is a great meter.

Q: 6. I have read the manual and Sekonic says that this meter must be kept away from floppy disks and similar materials. Does this include SD cards? If so, how would one do so.?

A: Floppy disks and SD cards use totally different technologies to record data. SD cards, USB sticks, and SSD's are NOT affected by magnets like floppy disks. You can safely store SD cards around the meter.

Q: 7. The L-208 comes with a flash shoe mount. Does this come with one and/or have an easy method of mounting it to a flash shoe?

A: The 398 was never designed to be used mounted on a camera. It has a metal body and a large magnet in it that is actually not a great thing to have around any digital recording devices. If small and simple is what you are looking for, the 208 is a very nice meter. The 398 is a very traditional meter that is modeled after one of the very first light meters and first incident measuring meter.

Q: 8. does this meter work to measure light from flashes?

A: No, the Sekonic L-398A Studio Deluxe III Light Meter is not designed for flash metering.

Q: 9. Does this meter work with PocketWizard plus 3 wireless?

A: You can attach a PocketWazard Plus 3 to the meter via a sync cord like this, https://bhpho.to/3Nsyv10 .

Q: 10. For measuring contrast of light, what is the precision of the result, can it display in 0.1 EV values, or rounded numbers like 1/3 or 1/2 EV?

A: Default setting is the .1 values, but you can do a custom function to measure in 1/3 or 1/2.

Purchased this Sekonic L-398A to replace Minolta meter to accommodate my aging vision; the latter had a small LED read-out. The Sekonic's black background with silver and red numerals, plus overall size, make it perfect for my needs.

This is the 2nd Sekonic Studio Light Meter that I have owned in my 50 year career as a filmmaker. I would still have the first that I owned for all those years, but I gave it to a friend who career was just beginning.

This is the basic light meter that has been used for decades. I replaced my old Studio Deluxe which was probably 35 years old with this newer version due to years of use ( and drops). The design is almost unchanged and is still reliable. It's not for everyone, especially if you need flash readings, and very low light levels, but for manual exposure in reasonable lighting, it's perfect. I got this to keep in my bag with my old Nikon S2. I have my other meters for flash and low light, but this one has a place in my tool kit.

The Sekonic L-398a has provided me accurate readings in natural light and this meter is built very solid. If I was taking pictures under artificial light or at night I'd pick one of the digital light meters but for my uses this has been a great meter.

Works well and has a solid construction compared to many meters. Good for a back up or a meter that bangs around in my general carry gear.

I wanted a very good meter that was old school with no bells and whistles. This is a simple, very accurate meter that works without batteries. Best value for my money and should last a lifetime.

I am using it to get proper exposure in contrast light, and close up in nature, where there are contrast subjects around. It's working perfect for me. I found no fault for the type of work I do.
