This APO-Summicron-SL 28mm f/2 ASPH Lens from Leica is a versatile wide-angle prime designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/2 aperture strikes a balance between speed and overall weight and size, offering a portable form factor along with the ability to excel in available light conditions. Well-suited for everyday shooting as well as landscape and architectural applications, the lens excels in low-light conditions and is also characterized by its consistent sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture and focusing ranges. Additionally, the lens provides a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" and gives you the ability to separate the subject from the background at f/2 while maintaining maximum sharpness and extensive creative possibilities. Complementing the optics is a Dual Synchro Drive AF Motor, which delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am debating to buy either old or new version of this Leica Summicron 28mm lens. The price is about $1000 difference. Can anyone tell me if it is worth to buy the new version?

A: Excellent question. Here's my take I owned the most recent prior version of this lens (the version you're referring to as heavily discounted). I was always very satisfied with that lens. However, when this newest version was announced earlier this year, I took a flyer and sold that lens, anticipating eventually buying this new version. My motivation was based on Leica's statements that they had redesigned the optics for a flatter image more attuned to digital sensors. I own a first generation M Monochrom and recently wanted to do some landscape and ruins shooting, so I purchased this new version of the 28mm Summicron. I have not been disappointed and in fact I have been even more satisfied with this newest 28mm Summicron than the prior version, which as noted I felt was very good. I know this is much more info than you were looking for but when buying a $4K lens it's important to take lots of factors into consideration. The most important factor I think is will this new lens (or any lens) produce the kinds of images you want to take. I do a lot of landscape shots (and LOTS of trees) and the improvement in edge to edge sharpness from f2.8 on up was worth the expense to me. Even at f2, this lens is great but the difference between the two lenses is not particularly noticeable. By f4, watch out! Hope this helps.

Q: 2. Does this lens breathe when rocking focus for video? Thanks.

A: There is some slight focus breathing when focus racking.

Q: 3. Hello!Does the lens hood for the previous ver of this lens (B&H # LE2820MB MFR # 11604) fit this version as well? I ask because this new screw in hood design interferes with the use of a circular poloraizer on this lens. Thank you.

A: The lens hood for the previous version of this lens will not be compatible.

Q: 4. Will this lens use the manual rangefinder focusing or will focusing only be through live view ?

A: You can use this lens with rangefinder as well as live view

Q: 5. Where is this lens made?

A: According to the manufacturer this lens is made in Germany, but this is subject to change.

Q: 6. When was this lens introduced and how does it compare with apo 90 M?

A: This lens was introduced in January of 2018. Optically it's what you would expect from Leica. It's an incredibly sharp lens with fast autofocus. The SL 75mm APO has many advantages over the 90mm. The 75mm outresolves the 90mm APO M, has autofocus and it's sharper. The disadvantage though is the contrast. The M lens has more of a punch to it's images while the SL is less contrasty but, makes it up in a moderate increase in sharpness & details. If you have an SL system, this is a fantastic lens to have. Hopefully this helps.

Q: 7. When using the 28mm lens do you need to use the Leica Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder for M System. What is this viewfinder typically used for ?

A: The Leica Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder for M System would not be needed when using this lens on an M series body.

Q: 8. which leica film bodies has a 28mm window?

A: reference from a Leica forum: The only M-mount viewfinders that showed "what happens around" with a 28mm lens were all on film cameras: the special low-magnification 0.58x finder of the M6 (available a la carte for the M7/MP/current film Ms)

Q: 9. Is this lens (Leica 11672) 6-bit coded?

A: Yes. All current Leica M lenses are 6 bit coded.

Q: 10. which leica film bodies have a 28mm window?

A: The models that will have the 28mm window would be the M4-2 and M4-P, and then all M models proceeding the M4-P.

Due to the virus situation I have not used this lens nearly as much as I would normally have with a new lens.
However, I have been shooting in and around our condo and our outside terrace. In short the image quality of this lens is Simply The Best.
Regardless of aperture setting, from f2 on up to f9 (I usually stop at f9 with an occasional f11) images are sharp across the image, crips, lovely color saturation, contrast, all are excellent. And in a first, remarkably I have not been able to detect ANY chromatic aberration; no green, cyan or purple fringing. A TRUE APO lens.
A slight negative would be this lens, while smaller than I expected (this lens is like a mini or 3/4 size S lens) is still a little heavy and when mounted on my SL (601) the combo weighs just about 4 pounds.
However this weight is worth the slight bother to me to have have a general purpose lens that I can shoot all day in all settings and obtain images that are as good as I've been getting.
I live in downtown Scottsdale AZ and this shot is from my terrace of a sunset looking southeast.

Finally received the lens as it was backordered. This lens is super sharp corner to corner even wide open at f2.0. So for a wide angle-- just outstanding. I have taken a number of images on my SL3. Clearly lives up to my expectations with the SL line of lenses.

Came from a Leica Q2 and thought that was good. This lens takes it to the next level, never seen images like this from a lens/camera. Can't ever go back to a Canon or Sony now.
