Q: 1. Any meaningful differences of the Diety S-Mic 2 and the Rode NTG-1 shotguns for crowd miking?

A: The S-Mic 2 may be a better choice because it has a slightly wider pickup range which is better to capture audio from multiple people than a mic with a very narrow pickup range, which is better for picking up one person. The S-Mic 2 is easy to use because it has no onboard switches or controls to adjust and it is also moisture resistant. Its frequency response range is 50 Hz to 20 kHz, it handles loud sounds up to 130 dB SPL, and has very low noise. The NTG1 has a frequency response range or 20 Hz to 20 kHz and handles loud sounds up to 138 dB SPL, and also has low noise. It also has an onboard low-cut filter which is useful to reduce low rumbling background noise. Both the S-Mic 2 and NTG1 are very good mics, but for miking a crowd, the S-Mic 2 may be the better option since it has a wider pickup range and not as focused as the NTG1. The noise level rating for the S-Mic 2 is slightly lower than the NTG1 (12 dBA vs 18 dBA). The moisture resistance is also a good feature for outdoor use.

Needed to buy an extension for my sm7b xlr cable to clear the mic mount but that has nothing to do with the product just something you should account if using the same mic. Other than that the stand is great with very very little to no noise transfer. Easy set up as well

This is my first arm, but so far I like mine. Selected the Rode over the Heil because I love the company and their customer service. My podcaster mic is a little too light for this arm, but I'm sure that the pop filter will even things out. (I knew the arm was light cause my email questions was answered with a personal phone call - great service)

Great desk mount mic arm for podcasting mic. Needs a heavy enough mic to counter balance but it works great mounted from the desk. Much better than the floor mic stand I had been using.

This is a great compliment to the Podcaster microphone and shock mount. I mounted this into my nice office desk and with the podcaster it works great and looks very classy. A great investment! Nick

I purchased this to go with my Rode Podcaster, which is one (physically) heavy mic. I do voice-overs for software tutorials. Worked like a champ out of the box. Heavyweight enough so I can swing it around and adjust it without droop either for sitting down recording or standing up. Much better than the tabletop stand I had been using.

This is a great Studio Arm, I'm using it with my Samson G-track Microphone plus a pop filter and it works great. I got it to do some podcasting and voice overs. I have different people coming to do Voice overs for commercials that i've been producing and they love the fat that this arm can move 360 some of them like to stand next to the mic, they like the freedom of the mic being on this Arm. I highly recommended.

Rock solid construction, doesn't sag with a Samson C03U USB Microphone with spider and a pop screen attached. Easily set up on my desk. Swings out of the way when not in use.

I am using the boom for doing radio shows out of the basement and it is a great way to free up some space on the table top. Nice to have the option to permanently mount it to the table via drilling holes or use the table edge clamp for temporary setups. Velcro straps for the cable are a great touch if you don't want to run the mic cable inside the rails. It's a quiet and sturdy unit and the mic stays where you put it (once you tighten the hardware). Couldn't be happier.

What can I say? Rode makes a great studio boom arm that is probably one of the better values available. If you are looking to save money this time, and concerned that you might get something substandard, don't worry. The quality is good. It comes with two attachments. The first clamps it to your desk or table. The other requires you drill a 1/4 inch hole (maybe it's half inch or bigger), but then the fitting first right down in the hole giving you a really finished look. I went with the clamp, because I didn't want a hole in my table, but that's just me.
