Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are there pre-cut ND filters available and if so in what densities?

A: No, there are not any pre-cut filters available for the rear gel filter slot on the lens.

Q: 2. what about parallax convergence in more close up shots? if that is what you call it.

A: Parallax issues would only occur say in rangefinders where you have an offset viewfinder, or viewfinder above the lens. Since SLR viewfinders are correlated via a mirror, what you see in the viewfinder is what you get.

Q: 3. How does the optical quality of this lens compare to the Canon 14mm prime f2.8?

A: Ive not used the lens you reference, but Im sure youll find reviews of it on the net. I can say that the 11-24 lens is absolutely outstanding in its optical quality and much more versatile than any prime lens. Ive achieved some truly awesome pics.

Q: 4. is there any info such as YouTube or otherwise to demonstrate how the rear gel filter works? meaning how and where it is inserted?

A: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens instruction manual in this link on page 10 of the pdf shows how to place the rear gel. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/254271.pdf

Q: 5. Does this lens have Image Stabilizer?

A: No, but it can easily be adapted to work on the Sony A7II

Q: 6. Has anyone used this for astrophotography? I know a 2.8 is more desirable for that type of shooting.

A: If you use this for Astro you would need to run longer shutter speeds which would either result in blurry stars (due to the movement) or increased noise due to increasing the ISO (to compensate for the light difference on a f/2.8 lens) But it's definitely more than possible depending on the camera it's being used on.

Q: 7. Is it made from Japan?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Japan. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 8. So does this mean that a person won't see convergence in the view? Has Canon conquered the problem? For example the top of the view converging together and becoming circular?

A: The lens is considered rectilinear. Meaning technically if you keep the camera and lens level the lines should be very straight. But as this is a very new lens there are no real world reviews as to how it performs but from the specifications it does sound really good.

Q: 9. what does Constant f/4 Maximum Aperture mean when the aperture is 4-22?

A: Maximum aperature refers to the maximum or largest area of light that the lens will let in. And when it's constant it's allows you to open up to F/4 at any focal length. A lot of less expensive lenses have variable maximum aperatures that change as you zoom the lens. Maybe F/5.6 for example. So long story short...it's a great thing that you can open up to F/4 even at 24mm.

Q: 10. Hi, I was contemplating renting this lens to use on a 5D II and a 7D II. I've seen other wide-angles cause fringing / darkening of the frame edges when mounted on a body with a crop sensor. I figure it'd be able to be used at 11mm on the 5DII but could I still get a usable 18mm from this on a 7D II without issue?

A: It is called vignetting and you have it backwards. Vignetting for an EF lens is worse on a full frame camera with the same lens at the same aperture. This has fairly high vignetting on a full frame camera, but considering the focal length, not that bad. On a 7DII it would not be a issue. As you calculate, it becomes an 18-39 equiv on a crop sensor. It would be phenomenal quality in that range. But there are a lot better values out there than this lens in that focal range. Consider the 10-22 or 10-18 EF-S lens, unless the highest optical quality is your goal. To me, the whole point of this lens is to get the 126 degree perspective and you need a FF camera to get it. You would need a 7mm lens on a 7DII to get it and that doesn't exist (except for fish eyes).

Never expected to be able to utilize such an incredible lens for both our equipment shots and recreational shots. Sharp, crisp all over and as well made as my Canon 24-70mm. With the 30-day return policy, I just had to try it and after using it, will keep it!

This lens rivals primes in the ultra wide spectrum. It is large and a little unwieldy, especially in its protruding front element which all by itself prompted me to purchase the Canon CarePak. But for performance, this thing is truly excellent. No edge distortion, minimal chromatic aberration and a fully rectilinear rendition every time. It's marvelous.

11mm is much wider than I expected and the field of view offered by this lens is staggering. It's so wide, it's easy to accidentally get your feet or a building wall behind you in the frame! Build quality is impressive, and the lens doesn't feel as heavy as some reviews make it out to be. The front the lens is wide, but overall it is quite stumpy and fits easily into my camera bag when placed on its side. Not being able to use a protective filter over the front element does keep me from pulling this out if it's misting or raining (not because it would hurt the lens, but because the mist easily gets on the lens and affects the photo), but I'm not worried about dust or dirt, as I keep a Rocket blower handy. Modern lens coatings are tough, and I'm not worried about the elements hitting the element. This lens is wonderful for capturing cloudscapes that would normally require multi-shot panoramic techniques. I find myself switching between this and the 100-400 II quite naturally for unique landscape perspectives. At f4 there is substantial vignetting - and I mean substantial, but it can be corrected in Lightroom or used creatively to focus the viewer on the center of the frame. I find this lens captures so much contrast in a high-contrast scene (using the 5DsR to capture sunsets with extreme brights and darks), that in Lightroom I have to pull the Contrast slider all the way back to -100, then use the Dehaze effect to bring back the detail. In doing this, I've found I can closely mimic or even slightly surpass the cloud detail and rendering I get with the Leica Q. This lens would likely perform well with multiple-exposure blending in these high-contrast scenarios, but I am not the sit-and-wait-with-a-tripod type. I would love it if Canon released a prime 11 mm f2.8 or f4 IS as a close cousin to this lens.

I'm a landscape photography. I've been comparing this lens to my Canon 17 mm tilt-shift - a tough lens to beat. This lens is sharp & compares well - wish it were faster & had shift. I'm still a bit on the fence - will it have a place in my camera bag? Pros: the lens is sharp. It enables a different perspective, opening new horizons beyond the routine landscape photography. Color is great. It is auto focus. Cons: At 11 mm It does exhibit some chromatic fringing, especially at the horizon, but the lens profile in LR does a good job of fixing this. Used at about 17 mm to 24 mm I find it compares very well with the 17 mm tilt-shift, minus the convenience of shift & the fine tuning of tilt to optimize depth of field. Maybe I'll get a bigger bag! Attached photo: I rarely include roads in my photos - this photo at 11 mm taken at my favorite haunt in Dolly Sods WV opens a new & different perspective for me. This would not work with less than 11 mm.

I purchased this lens few months ago and using for landscape. That's was amazing, super wide picture, sharp, details. The feeling of holding hand is very good. The lens is suitable for architecture I just regret that is has no IS mode.

What a lens! Yes it's F4 however that has yet to present a real issue. We've been using this on a RED weapon with a Ronin and having the ability to go this wide and then zoom in on the fly is such a time saver. Debated between this and the Zeiss 15mm 2.8 for a while. I've used both extensively and decided to go with the canon for the flexibility, additional width on a cropped sensor and honestly after comparing both at 15mm, the Zeiss is a little better (I love that lens) but would not be noticed by most. If you really have a need to shoot wide in low light you can pick up the sigma 24mm 1.4 for 850 and you are covered. Great distortion control and unbelievably sharp. It's heavy but if you are working with a cinema camera on a gimbal it's not super noticeable compared to the Zeiss. Highly recommend
