A versatile black and white paper that is well-suited to showcasing your work, this box of 100 sheets of 5 x 7" Multigrade V RC Portfolio Paper from Ilford features a pearl 44K surface finish that has a more textured appearance than glossy paper to help reduce overwhelming surface reflections, yet still retains some reflectivity to achieve deeper black values for a longer apparent tonal scale. Compared to the standard range of medium weight RC papers, this heavyweight Portfolio paper has a 255 gsm base for a sturdier structure that is ideal for exhibiting or for use in presentation books. Its bright white base tint delivers a cool-to-neutral image color, and it responds well to select toners, especially selenium, for increasing the effective print lifespan. As a variable contrast paper, it responds to seven full grades of contrast during printing, when using multigrade filters, and it is suitable for printing both conventional black and white negatives as well as chromogenic black and white negative films. Additionally, the paper can be processed using standard black and white chemistry in either trays or using machine processors.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How long will the chemical last if I start using it?

A: Once mixed, the Multigrade Developer will last 6 months in a sealed container.

Q: 2. How long does it usually take to ship?

A: You may calculate your actual shipping options/order totals by adding the items you want to a shopping cart. It will then list the shipping options, descriptions, ETA's and fees to your location.

Q: 3. Should this paper be printed with Photo black or Matte? My epson P800 automatically changes the ink to matte

A: You would want to print with Photo black ideally. If you haven't yet, you can download the ICC profile for this paper here and it should print accordingly. https://ilford.com/printer-profiles-paper-settings/

Q: 4. The product description mentions that this film can be pushed to ISO 3200. Would the results be similar to the Ilford ISO 3200 (120) film, which I use for medium format? I do a lot of night photography (available light - no flash) and was wondering what kind of results I would get with this 4x5 film if pushed to ISO 1600 or even ISO 3200. Thinking of moving to 4x5, but I want to hear what people have to say about the film pushed to 1600 or 3200. Thanks!

A: HP5 is rated 400, which means it's actually around a 200 ASA film. I use it all the time, and NEVER push it. If you're working with a 4 x 5 camera (or a pinhole) you are on a tripod and should not really need to push it. I believe it is still possible to find Delta 3200 in 4x5, which is what I would recommend if you want to shoot in really low light.

Q: 5. Can this paper be used in a pinhole camera and developed with paper developer?

A: Yes you can use Arista EDU Ultra Graded RC Paper in a pinhole camera and develop it with standard paper developers such as Dektol

Q: 6. How does this compare to the 2150XL chemistry?

A: Ilford Multigrade Developer (Liquid) for Black & White Paper - 5 Liters is just paper developer. That is optimized for multigrade paer. The Ilford 2150 Developer/Fixer Black and White Print Chemicals Kit 2x(3 liter) is, Ilford 2150XL Developer and Ilford 2150XL Fixer are liquid concentrate chemicals supplied as a kit specifically for use with the Ilfolab 2150 RC table top processor.

Q: 7. First time I've bought film not in a roll. Using it in a pinhole camera. How does it come packaged? Is each sheet in its own lightproof sleeve or is it all bundled in one lightproof sleeve? I ask because I need to put it into 5x7 film holders in the dark and I want to know what to expect. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I have a darkroom with a red light bulb I can dim way down. Should that be okay for processing in trays?

A: Sheet film is packaged in a trip box..... The 25 sheets of film will be in a black plastic bag and then contained within a box with an additional lid. The combination of black plastic bag and the double-boxing keeps the film light tight. Sheet film comes with a notch code in the top corner. If you are loading your holders with the opening flap at the top; the notch code should be in the top right corner when loading. Film is panchromatic so it must be loaded and processed in complete darkness. Your red safelight can only be used when making contact prints.

Q: 8. Can i develop film with this?

A: I have never used this developer on film. It is designed for B&W photographic print paper. I use Rodinal to process my film.

Q: 9. If this is a multigrade paper like what is written on the front, how can it be graded (1-4) paper?

A: As a variable-contrast paper, it is capable of delivering grades 1 through 4 with the appropriate filters.

Q: 10. Resently bought this multitone brand photo paper, who makes it? I do pinhole photography using paper as megative. Iso 6?

A: The Inkpress Media company makes the MultiTone Black & White RC Paper. The ISO of the paper may be 10 ISO.

This paper is even better than the IV it is replacing. I've used IV for many years, so the news it was being replaced was a bit intimidating. But I have found both the blacks and the whites to be stronger and to hold more detail. This paper does behave a little differently in the darkroom. With IV you begin to see image in the developer after 8-10 seconds. With the new paper you don't really see anything until about 20 seconds, then it develops quickly. I've found that once the print is fully developed it looks on the dark and muddy side under the safelight, but it is not. The image really pops out at you when processing is complete and you look at it under white light. The tonal range look pleasingly liner, and I get the contrast I want with a slightly lower number filter (or in my case, setting in the VC head). I've also found that burning and dodging take a little longer than I'm used to, and that makes it easier to control. For some reason, the image looks sharper than I get with IV as well. I use an Apo-Rodagon-N and my Peak focuser reveals perfectly sharp grain throughout the whole area of the image. And the print reveals that degree of care. Aside from that, the paper identical to IV. It is the same weight and the pearl surface has the identical face and sheen. It is truly a great paper to work with.
