The Tiffen 105mm Coarse Thread Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. Linear polarizers are best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. What is the size of this filter?

A: Series 9 filters by Tiffen are a unique filter system once popular with older lens and camera design. Requiring a Series 9 adapter ring, this system allows you to use one standard size filter (Series 9) on many lens sizes. Series 9 filters, although screw-on style, require a bit more work to set up. The glass filter drops into the adapter ring and is held securely in place with the included retaining ring (adapter ring sold separately). Series 9 filters have no threads. Although these filters are no longer as popular as they used to be, they allow the use of filters for harder to fit lenses, a common problem with older camera lenses.

Q: 3. Thickness of the filter

A: 4mm

Q: 4. How do I use 2 linear polarizes as a ND filter on my Canon 6D ? Also will it be compatible with this camera ?

A: Two liner polarizers rotated with the polarization of each at right angles to the other can make a very effective ND filter. The problem is that any undesired rotation of either of the lenses, either by screwing them on or by rotating the polarized glass accidentally, will change the density to something you were perhaps not expecting. Why not just buy a ND filter of the desired density? They don't cost that much. If your lens has a 77 mm objective, the filters should be compatible, no matter what camera you are using.

Q: 5. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Hi, this filter is compatible. with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage.

Q: 6. Why isn't it available in 46mm filter size? That's the size most of my Micro Four Thirds lenses are.

A: Charles... this filter is available, but B&H does not list it on their website as it is considered Special Order . Please call B&H directly and tell them you would like to request they special order item # 46WPOL from Tiffen. I currently show a few of these in stock and they can be dropped shipped directly from Tiffen to you when ordered through B&H.

Q: 7. Can I use this filter on a Lee filter system holder?

A: There are two industry standard nominal filter thicknesses: 2 mm and 4 mm. The Lee holder, while normally set up for 2 mm, can, with the addition of longer screws, can accommodate 4 mm filters as well.

Q: 8. Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

Q: 9. I'm buying a polarizer for manual focus lens, will focus peaking work with a linear polarizer? I'm using a Sony a6300.

A: Yes-focus peaking will work.

Q: 10. I am going to use this on an old Konica auto S2. Is this filter appropriate for use on a range finder and will the threads pitch match on the lens? Thanks.

A: I was fairly successful using it without checking through the live view on a Leica 240 MP. I often photograph in a constant desert or sun lit canyon/river area. I first use the filter to look at the scene without the camera lens attached. I could tell where the max effect was in relation to the sun direction (I live above the northern 45 degree lat) and then know that that direction was best for the max. I used old film leica's in a similar manner many years ago too...AJZ
