Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this compatible with Windows 7?

A: Agreed

Q: 2. MacOS, High Sierra, 13.1.2. Need a backup HD for Apple Time Machine. Will this be a good choice?

A: Yes, the Glyph Technologies 1 TB BlackBox Mobile Hard Drive is fully compatible with Mac and can be used as a Time Machine backup destination.

Q: 3. Is the power adapter required when plugging into a Macbook or is it USB-powered via Thunderbolt 3 USB-C?

A: what are the voltage & Amperage requirements if I lose the power supply cable and plug?

Q: 4. can i use thunderbolt connection ?

A: no thunderbolt.... this is new USB Type C

Q: 5. The 12 TB model is listed as "Enterprise" in the title, however is the internal HDD itself (not the casing unit) being included as part of the enterprise-quality claim too (i.e. regarding warranty and MTBF)?

A: The reference to the enterprise is about the drive itself.

Q: 6. will this work with RAID 5 for video editing?

A: A RAID 5 setup requires at least 3 disks. The Glyph Technologies 40TB Blackbox PRO RAID Desktop Drive (2 x 20TB, Thunderbolt 3), B&H # GLBBPR40RDT3, has 2 disks. You can still use it for video editing, but it can only work in RAID 0, 1, JBOD, and SPAN modes. If you are looking for a RAID 5 array, I would recommend looking into the Oyen Digital Fortis 5C 50TB 5-Bay External Drive Array with SoftRAID 8 Premium Kit, B&H # OY5FU3C50TV8, which does support RAID 5.

Q: 7. Will this drive work with original Thunderbolt connection?

A: I havn't found any adapter cable for it yet. But I'm sure it will come soon. It is still super fast read/write with USB.

Q: 8. how does this differ from a glyph 1tb studio mini mobile hard drive?

A: The Black Box model has only a USB 3.0/2.0 interface and spins @ 5400 rpm. The Studio Mini has, USB 3.0, Firewire 800 and eSATA interfaces and spins along @ 7200 rpm. So the Studio mini is the better choice for medium-to-heavy video editing and the Black Box is better suited for general storage. That said, I have edited hi-res footage (Avid DNxHD145) with the Black Box and had no issues whatsoever. But I might have just gotten lucky, too.

Q: 9. will this drive work with a router network of two computers ?

A: Your router would need to USB to have a hard drive connect to it. Then the computers can connect via your network.

Q: 10. Does it come with a USB cable?

A: Yes. You can see it on the picture if you zoom in. It's also in the product description, USB 3.1 Type-C Connectivity . By the way, USB 3.1 is backwards compatible if your computer uses a USB 2.0.

Amazing portable hard drive. Super fast. I use it on MacBook Pro retina. The speeds are great. Transfers large files (7gb+) and it's great. I know from friends Glyph has amazing customer service too so that's great to know.

I bought this to replace a G-Technology drive. I have always been uncomfortable with the G drive, the first copy I received was faulty right out of the box. (B&H was great with the exchange!!) And, the second copy has always acted weird (in my opinion). It started getting really slow and was constantly shutting off even with trying to change the settings on my computer. So, in fear of losing everything, I bought this Glyph drive. It has been great right out of the box. Set up was a breeze, transferring files was a breeze. I use an external hard drive to keep my thousands of images, so if the G-Technology drive crashed, I would not have been happy! While I have only had it a few days, I can tell the tremendous difference in the two. Even though the G drive was Thunderbolt this Glyph drive is much more responsive. It's always a crap shoot when buying new gear, so I was a little afraid that I was going to experience the same issues. But, this drive works like a dream! I would totally recommend it.

Although the 2TB version only has a somewhat slow 5400rpm drive, it's perfect for backing up important files, or anything else that doesn't need super-fast speed.

This is my 4th Glyph hard drive. Solid, reliable, and with speeds true to spec. I purchased this for Time Machine backups, so this 5400 rpm model, compared to the more expensive 7200 rpm, is plenty fast and quiet. Glyph uses the same drives as everyone else, what you are also paying for is reliable hardware, interface, and warranty/customer service.
