I have used this style of Western Digital external drives for backup for years.
They work great. Never had one failure.

I've used many a WD external hard drives for archival storage of video files. I've had drives from other manufacturers fail over time, but, knock on wood, all my WD drives keep chugging along. The transfer speed with the USB 3.0 is good -- it's not firewire, but it's adequate for its purpose. If you can get this drive on sale, it has a great price to performance ratio.

This was the most affordable 16TB drive that I could find anywhere and by using my Payboo card with B&H I saved even more. The drive was easily reformatted for my Mac and provides the backup I need. Hopefully it will last much longer than the limited warranty though for now it seems to have passed the infant mortality phase. The drive is supplementing a couple of WD RAID 0 drives and interestingly is much faster at writing data than either of the RAID 0 drives.
