The 55mm 6pt/2mm Star Filter from Tiffen creates multiple points of light, or "stars," streaking outward from a central light source.  This filter comes in a rotating mount for critical placement of the star effect.

Wedding photographers will especially appreciate the value of this filter. When it comes to special effects shots, why not offer your client a table shot of the menu or invitation next to a glowing, star-filled candle? Shooting at night? Make that street lamp take on a different, more dramatic appearance by using the star filter. Any point light source will achieve the effect.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

The effect is produced by a series of thin lines etched into the flat optical surface of a clear filter

The size and brightness of the star lines produced are first a function of the size, shape, and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter

These spacings are measured in millimeters and range from 1mm to 4mm: A 1mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for any given source

Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak through the center of the light

Tiffen offers 4, 6, and 8 point symmetrical star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through their exclusive Hollywood FX Series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process

Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's this filter thickness? 2mm?

A: This is a 4mm filter.

Q: 2. Is this on a rotating mount?

A: Yes, this filter comes on a rotating mount

Q: 3. Can you please provide example photographs with & w/o this attachment?

A: Unfortunately, the manufacturer was only able to provide the example photo to the left of the main photo of the Nisha Mirage Effect Attachment 55mm.

Q: 4. Is the 1mm filter version available too?

A: At this time we only offer the Self-Rotating 1mm Blue True-Streak Filter as a 77mm filter. We do not have it as 82mm. https://bhpho.to/2ML0A6p

Q: 5. Is this a rotating filter? I want to put it on the Voigtlander 27mm with the new squarehood lens hood.

A: You can rotate the Tiffen 62mm Digital HT 4 Point/2mm Star Effect Filter to change where the points of the stars are pointing to.

Q: 6. What material is the frame made out of?

A: The Tiffen 82mm North Star Effect Filter has an aluminum ring.

Q: 7. is this a variable filter?

A: No, the Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is not a variable neutral density filter. The Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is designed to create multiple stars that appear to streak outward from the center of bright light sources in your scene. It does not vary the density of light entering the camera and cannot be adjusted, though you may rotate the filter to rotate the direction of the stars that are created by the filter.

Q: 8. How would this filter behave when shooting a sunrise?

A: While it will depend on the size of the sun in your image (and to some extent, your chosen aperture and focal length), it should behave similar to the sample image on our website. The main difference is, as the sun is both a large and bright light source, the points in the star would be much wider than when photographing a smaller light source or a small specular highlight. The size of the bands would typically depend on the size of the sun in the image. As focal length plays a part in the size of the sun (as well as the sun's position in the sky and/or as it approaches the horizon), wide angle lenses may typically have thinner points, while telephoto lenses would have wider points.

Q: 9. Will this filter work on Nikkor 14-24mm lens?

A: The NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter (150 x 170mm) could be used on the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Lens, but you will need the NiSi 150mm Filter Holder for Nikon 14-24mm Lens. Here is the link:https://bhpho.to/3iD3uue.
