The Trioplan 35mm f/2.8 II Lens for Sony E-Mount from Meyer-Optik Gorlitz is a classic, compact, wide-angle prime lens designed for Sony E-Mount-mount cameras. Made for travel, street, or nature photography, this sturdy all-metal lens produces a high degree of sharpness. It has a distinct artistic quality for a smooth rendering of out-of-focus areas to suit shallow depth of field shooting.

The lens elements are made from coated Schott optical glass in order to produce vibrant colors and high contrast in a variety of lighting conditions. This lens is also characterized by its manual focus operation, short 7.9" minimum focusing distance, and a 12-blade diaphragm that produces the famous Trioplan soap bubble bokeh for out-of-focus highlights.

I don't think there is a better lens for any A7X/A9X body while traveling. Fantastic image quality, size, and weight.

My actual rating is around 4.5 and is based on my use with the Sony a7r. I like the overall image rendering of the lens. It's sharp but mostly smooth at the same time, with excellent contrast. The bokeh is variable as with most lenses, and is usually good wide open, although less so when stopped down greatly (aperture doesn't look perfectly round at f8 for one thing). Compared to the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 (at 2.8 to 11) with the Nikon D800E I used to have, I find that the Sigma might be very slightly sharper, but I prefer the overall rendering of the Sony/Sonnar combination. With the Sony as compared to the Nikon/Sigma, I appreciate carrying around an outfit that provides roughly equivalent image quality for much less weight and bulk (and the difference in lens weight and size is a big part of that) You can use a single 49mm filter on the lens and the hood will still bayonet to the lens just fine. The autofocusing seems quiet, consistent and accurate, and I haven't noticed any focus shift with aperture changes. I've found that manual focus is easy use - it's easy to get precise focus, unlike manual focus with the Sigma 35 and Nikon combo (even using live view with a loupe). I did confirm that in extreme conditions of non-practical image processing you can see some variable bullseye pattern color shading in large areas of smooth tones (like sky, or a gray card). Take a photo of a clear blue sky or fill the frame with a gray card, then process the raw image by upping contrast and saturation to the max and you'll see it. Maybe it's because of the sensor and has nothing to do with the lens per se, or maybe it's an interaction between the two. In any case I haven't seen it with normal photos, so it's not an issue for me.

This was one of my first lenses for any Sony mirrorless camera years ago. It was the best street lens I had partially due to lightness and ease of size but wonderful clarity unmatched by most other Sony lenses at the time. Bottom line is that I traded it in for a zoom about 5 years ago and am now purchasing it again for the same reasons I originally loved it. I have found this Zeiss lens to be superior in clarity and the size is perfection.

I actually got a copy of this lens off ebay when I was first getting into photography. I didn't understand that I was using a crop body and this was a full frame lens. But I never had any complaints about the images it produced on a crop body, I just loved the images coming out of it. Now, years later, this thing stays on my A7RIII almost full time. I don't mind the vignetting as it either adds to the image's character or you can always fix it in post. I won't be selling this lens any time soon.

Equipped with my A7R III, I simply do not need an F-Stop lower unless I need more bokeh that a smaller aperture would offer for portrait photography with a 35mm lens. The bokeh on this lens is great for portraits. My typical day time street photography is usually done at a range of 4.0 to 8.0 and this lens is a beast such that a 2.8 F-Stop is just fine. An aperture of 1.4 or 1.8 on the 35 mm prime lens is much larger and would not accommodate my particular needs for size. The low light performance on my A7R III is spectacular as well as my older A7 using this 35 mm lens. I can toss this into my backpack being my go to lens for landscape and casual portrait photography. I use a 50mm or 85mm at 1.8 F-stop for posed portraits but usually I do more street photography, landscapes, and family candid shots such that the 35mm 2.8 works better for my needs with great resolution detail. A great overall lens.

Yes, it's a slow 35 but it's an excellent lens. Image quality is superb. AF is super fast and accurate. It weights next to nothing and makes the A7 series body the compact and light mirrorless system it was designed to be. Had the new 35mm 1.8 and Sigma 35mm 1.4 and dumped both for this.

This is the perfect lens for walking around town taking pictures of whatever comes up. It is super sharp so if you have to take a picture of that lighthouse far away, you can crop it. Super light.
